Yellot Canby: It doesn't matter whether you go 2-6 volt in series or 2-12 parallel as long as you get the required cranking capacity. You can come up with that capacity either way. Shape of the battery doesn't affect it either as long as you have that capacity. I farmed in an area where we quite regularly got -20F in winter, had 4 - 6 cylinder diesels all with dual batteries, always got 5 plus years out of batteries. Some of my tractors had 2-6 volt in series, while some had 2-12 volt parallel, couldn't see any difference. The factory instalation in my 1066 went 8 years and that tractor was rarely ever started in winter. In my opinion, good maintainence, items like clean terminals, good cables and regular use only adds to the life of a battery. I never let a vehicle of any kind go more than 30 days without starting and a good warm up, doesn't matter whether it be tractor, truck or car. I will say this, if for example my 1066 had not been going for 20 plus days, I would pick a mild day for that warm up. Some folks recommend trickle charge, but in my opinion the whole tractor needs the warm up. One thing I will recommend is extra capacity over and above what manufacturer calls for, and you can gain that with either system.
