Burnt A for parts?

The rear axle housings (final drive housings) on my '43 A are busted. A farmhand tried to use the tractor to pull tree stumps and I assume he didnt take out the slack in the chain and the resulting jerk bent the drawbar and the housings busted. I found a parts tractor locally but it has been through a building fire. I wonder if the fire would have caused any damage to the housings other than melting the seals? Would the housings be safe to use? Thanks!

I have been told that if the casting still has oil in it after the fire it and the internal gears/parts are more than likely OK. Now what it would do to axles is another story especially considering safety. Just what I have heard. Good luck.

Hi Tom,
I have been using a Farmall 100 for the last 5 years that was burned badly enough to burn both back tires and one front tire completely off. Other than an axle seal that leaks slightly, there were no long term effects. I repainted the tractor; actually I have a picture posted on the tractor photos, just look under Farmall 100. I don't think you will have any problem, especially if you are going to put new seals, bearings, etc. in the housings.

The cast iron housing should be OK. Gears and bearings might have lost their "temper", though.
