I'm working right now on a small 25x36 steel building on a place we bought, turning it into a "one-project-at-a-time" shop to hold me over until I can build a bigger one on the place. That way my projects won't be in the way of repairing ranch equipment here at our home shop. I've already got the floor epoxied grey, insulation and tin on the walls, and working on the ceiling now. Have 4 large metal-halide lowbay lights I picked up on ebay, plus it'll have flourescents around the walls for task lighting. Have an overhead radiant tube heater I picked up used for cheap, and it'll also have AC. Gonna build a small lean-to just outside the walk-in door for an office and a place for the air compressor. Have an old working Pepsi machine for "refreshments" and also eventually it'll have a TV in there too and maybe even a computer. The idea being that by having the shop have all the "comforts of home", there won't be any reason to be in the house! Cowman's idea down below about having the shop connected to the house is great, but here's one better- saw a few years ago an article about some rodeo family who built a huge steel building for their indoor roping arena, and in one end of it, up off the ground above the chute area, they built a complete "apartment" with several bedrooms, a balcony to sit out on overlooking the arena, and they lived in it. Now picture that building with a cement floor, hoists, tools, etc. filled with tractors and other projects! Lastly, a for a neat website forum entirely devoted to "the ideal shop", do a yahoo or google search for "garage junkies"...lots of good stuff there!
