I have a 1940 M and I would like to replace the existing engine with a Farmall 400 or 450 engine. What is the difference between a 400 and a 450 engine? I am pretty new to farmalls but from what I've gathered the M, SM, 400 and 450 engines are all the same....? Is this correct? If I were to make the swap with a 400 or 450, will the engine bolt right up into the M's frame? Thank you for any help. Have a great weekend.

you will need to use your 'm' front cover unless you are going to use the live pump from a 400 or 450 or all of the holes for the distributor drive won't line up.

The late M"s and the SM"s had the same bolt patterns as the 400 & 450. All you need is a distributor drive off one of these. If you can"t find one I have one that I would sell.

All of those engines will readily interchange, the differences are inside the engine, the outside of the engines are identical.

OK Tye, I have my field guide to farmall tractors out in front of me. It say's "the 400 replaced the Super M in 1954. But I think a 400 would work. The differnce between 400 and 450, it's newer and has about 3.5 more horse. For a little more info. you might want to talk to Hugh MacKay or El Toro, either one of them might know.
