Would a farmall 560 diesel have plenty of power to run a silage (spelling) blower?

Well, anything has enough power to run a blower if you moderate the wagon speed to match the horsepower available. I know Dad used to fill the 20x68 silo with a Super M on a NewHolland 27 blower. A 560 gas ran the same blower for many years after that, with much better results. Though, it's nothing compared to the old 856 with the IH 600 now.

A turboed 560 would be one swwweeeet blower tractor. Even a non-torboed one would do fine. I had a 6000 Ford Comander we used on the blower for several years. It was tuboed and would put corn silage up a 60 ft silo as fast as the wagon woulld spit it out. And it would fill a silo on one tank of fuel.

Rick: Sure the 560D will run a silo blower. I once filled a 24' x 70' silo in 24 hours non stop, with 560D on NH blower and 1066 with NH 890 in field while 656D and 300 pulled the wagons. The bottle neck was moving wagons fast enough, not the blower itself. We found speed improved if 300 did all the unloading as 656 made better time to and from field with wagon. May I remind you that 560D was putting out 90hp and went through a pto clutch pack every two years, and the only pto work tractor did was blower.

That 24 hour silo filling was haylage, thus it did settle about 30% and we topped it two days later. You've got to remember also, this was in the 1970s and these tractors were still relatively new at the time, in fact 1066 and 890 harvester were new.

Hi Hugh, That was in the late 1940's when they started using a chopper. Hal

Hi Hugh, When they came out with that chopper in the late 70's was the best thing for filling silos
since they had sliced cheese.

They used an M for towing the chopper and used trucks with dump beds. We used a 10-20
on the blower and that revolutionized silo filling. We gathered all the unemployed in town that wanted to work and it took about 3 weeks working 6 days a week. The chopper took about 3 days to fill 2 big silos and we tramped the silage as we filled. Hal

I came along too late to tramp silage....

There was a story in my community of a crew that was filling a silo. There were several older farmers and about 5 or 6 teenagers working on the fill. The older guys had been giving the teens grief all week, and making them pay their dues. On the last day of the fill, after lunch, the older guys told the teens they'd trade places with them and tramp the last of it in that afternoon.
The teens decided it was their chance to get even, so after about an hour, one of them let out a blood-curdling scream, while two others threw an old shirt and a half-bushel of ripe tomatoes into the blower! The older guys about climbed over each other coming out of that silo!

I would've probably been the first down the rungs.
Those cows loved that silage and even wore grooves in the concrete from their tongues rubbing
that surface. Hal

I had a 60" silo that I ran a H on the blower. I could unload a wagon in 6 minutes. That was after the pipe got cleaned up. 560 should have no problem at all.

Boyd: I've unloaded too many loads of silage in my day to believe an H will put a full wagon load in a 60' silo in 6 minutes. I started with a 50' silo and choice of Cockshutt 540 or Farmall 300 for blower. The Cockshutt had the edge on blower and since 300 had the edge on pulling wagons that is how it happened. It was however the bottle neck with 560D on the harvester. 5 year later I bought a 656D for use on blower and with 560D in field that eliminated the bottleneck.

That was however short lived as within two years I bought a new 1066 and NH 890, 560D went to blower and with 300 and 656 both pulling wagons I once again had a bottleneck at the blower. I put a 100 hp on blower and still had a bottleneck.

I doubt if an H will unload a full 16' 3 beater NH wagon in 15 minutes. I blew silage into 70' silo with 560D and that 560 was cranking 90 hp. It would take it almost full speed from NH wagon. I never timed it but I'm thinking most silage wagons at full speed will take about 3 minutes to unload. The H might do a 1/2 full 2 beater wagon in 6 minutes.
