I solved the frozen motor question. I pushed the clutch in and it started right up! Now a new dilemna. It's stuck between two gears and or frozen in the rear end. I don't know what gear it's stuck in, but it won't seem to break loose. I really need to move snow now. What can I do. Thanks to everyone being patient with my rookiness.

I think Ia Gary is right about the rear end being frozen with ice and that is preventing the tractor from moving. You need a heat lamp, a magnetic heater or some safe heating device placed under the rear end, cover with old blankets to keep the heat in, when the ice melts it should run out the drain plug at the bottom, below the PTO , Square nut plug...I doubt that it is locked in two gears, do the thawing first before you start the gear thing...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Thanks guys for the help. I now know that the rear end is frozen. I couldn't even budge the PTO on/off lever. I will start the thawing tomorrow. Can anyone recommend a good type of good, inexpensive type of heater to buy for future problems like this. I think the magnetic heater thing sounds good. I don't have the means now to heat a whole area(just a hand-held blowtorch) so I need a good product to buy. Thanks again so much for the help.

I take it the tractor's new to you... Probably would've been best to change out all the fluids before you started using it.

Can you store the tractor inside somewhere, if you aren't already? Leaving the tractor outside is the #1 cause of water getting into the rear end. Keeping the tractor inside, under cover, will eliminate everything but condensation, but it'll take many years for enough condensation to build up to cause this same problem again.

For this problem you could BBQ briquets in a pan under the rear end. I have a kerosene fueled space heater that also work in well vented areas. They also have them in LP fueled. These heaters have a fan to direct the heat where you want it.

Neighbors and i went to help retired farmer line up machinery for his auction. Real cold out and the 880 oliver wouldn't move. Went and got heaters and 3 gal. of water later it was good to go. Puzzled every one there for a while. P.S. I bought the 880.

I forgot the froozen part. Pull the drain plug on bottom rear end. If oil comes out there is no ice. |If nothing comes out it is ice. Get a heater of some kind and start warming. Cover the rear end with a tarp or somthing to contain the heat. remove plug again and drain the water. Replace lost oil and go. You might want to drain again when warm to make sure you got all the water.

You can start by taking out the three bolts that hold the shifter lever down. Look inside you will see three steal bars with notches in them. The shifter fits in the notches. All three notches should line up and be in center position to be in nuetral. You can move these with a pry bar. You may have to rock wheels a little to move them. Replace shifter and try it. Shift carfully until you have time to rebuild the shifter peg.
