Wet black soot out of the muffler

When I start the engine on my 1942 Farmall H, there is a wet black material coming out of the exhaust for a few seconds, enough to splatter all over the hood. I have overhauled the engine, new pistons and sleeves, new valves, seats and guides and a new manifold. The head was checked for cracks and pressure tested. The head surface was machined flat and the head gasket sealed with permatex copper coat. The carburetor was rebuilt, new fuel line, strainer and an inline filter also installed. This discharge is wet; it smears like water and then dries. I thought it might be anti-freeze but it is not sticky. I used a block sealer but that has not helped either. I’m at the end of my rope with this. Could it be condensation in the exhaust system? Anyone had a similar problem or any ideas?
Thanks, Bill in TN

I have the same problem with a 450. Put a bend on top of the muffler to direct the water towards the side, at least your tractor will stay clean!

Yeah, aggravates the bajeebas out of me. My Super C Sunday ride always does this. Been told it's because I never put her under a load to burn the carbon off. That's why I always carry a white cloth rag in the tool box under the seat to wipe the crud off. It's easy to wipe off when wet, will stain the paint when it dries.

That is exactly what you have Bill...condensate in the exhaust. It may be possible that you are compounding the situation with an overly rich fuel mixture on the carburator (thats where the black soot is coming from). It seems to be more present in the winter months as a nice hot manifold cools off a lot quicker with the lower outdoor temperatures that are present. Check your mixture on your carb and live with it from there...because like the boys said, they all do it at one point or another.

Bill,

Just like the other guys said, that is completely normal. They all do it.

I had a 40 H for 20 some years that every so often would blow water out the exhaust. It would feel like a light rain and then it would stop. It ran smooth and always started and the guy that bought it says it"s running like a top.

I think your guess is correct. I know I don't use my H hard enough to burn the carbon out of the exhaust. When they mostly idle around, shoot seems to build up. When you start up the exhaust system is cold. Water is a by product of combustion and cools on the sides of the cold exhaust stack. It loosens the soot and sprinkles it out. You may try to lean the tractor somewhat for the type of work you are doing. I believe if it were taken out and worked hard and up to temperature the sooty stuff would dissapear.
