What are the chances that the oil cooler is the site of antifreeze getting into oil. The current owner called me last night to tell me the farmer that used it last summer drained a 1/2 qt. antifreeze out of crankcase when he drained oil. The borrower put radiator sealer in and did not get antifreeze in oil after that. He worked it but do not know how long or hard. Other possibilities are o-rings on sleeves starting to go and possibly brass sleeve around injectors corroded according to IH mechanic. This mechanic seems to feel that cooler or injector sleeves most likely the site of leak and not the o-rings on piston sleeves. What do you all think.
Mechanic says 300.00 to 400.00 for new oil cooler if the problem and didn't ask about $ if injector(s) bad.
If o-rings are bad, he said 900.00 to 1200.00 just for parts.
Is there any way to isolate where the problem is with visual inspection.
Haven't bought it yet as this revelation spooked me yesterday.
I'm pretty good mechanic and could do any or all repairs.

I agree with Allen's comment below, the engine needs opened up to see what you're dealing with here. You could be dealing with a complete overhaul or the replacement of the oil cooler.

You've got a tractor that has been used by people other then the owner that had half @$$ed repair methods used to get it off their place before it broke down completely. Does the term "whipped like a government mule" mean anything? I'd be very leery of this unit.

Not a chance in haties if the oil cooler was bad then you would have oil in the antifreeze , either the o/rings on the bottom of the sleeves are dripping or ya got pin holes in the sleeves or just maybe one of the soft plugs in the top of the head is leaking , did find that once.

It is very possible for oil cooler to leak coolant to oil but not oil to coolant. I have had it go both ways.

It would be a fist for me as 50 lbs or more oil pressure will overcome 14lbs of radatior pressure . And like allen said pull it down atleast the pan and pressure up the rad to about 18-20 lbs and look . all you are out is a pan gskt. and also the valve cover i did have a 1066 that the soft plugs in the head were leaking .

Had an oil cooler that leaked coolant into the oil but almost no oil into the coolant. Once you shut them off they have 14#coolat and 0psi oil to flow until the sysyem cools. Apperantly the leak closed off with heat or the higher pressure.

Micheal,

I think that engine needs to be opened up. Pretty common occurance on these old dogs.
