1466 another question

The guy originally wanted 7500.00. When he told me about the water in oil he said he would take off 500.00. So if we figure the OH kit at 2000.00, go back to original price of 7500.00 and take off 2000.00 which would make it 5500.00 for my price to shoot at him. Does this sound reasonable. I do not want to get to him but definitely do want to leave myself room for the OH.

Michael,

I have been reading your posts and I can tell you would like to have this tractor. I have an old 1466 that I use and drop a little money in each year. It's cheap horsepower for me (so far) and I like the old girl. I really think you need to take a step back from this one. You might be able to put stop leak in her every year and get by for quite a while, but maybe not. I believe I would keep look'in. Just my uninformed two cents, good luck.

The tractor you are looking at might be in a lot better shape, but I don't think mine is worth much over $4500.00. Like I said earlier, I don't claim to know too much, just my opinion.

In the photo you entitled "Gear Teeth in the transmission" the piece near the left side of the photo is a part of a detent roller not a gear tooth. Without the detent roller, shift linkage feels loose and does not " snap " when going into or coming out of High, Low and Reverse. Not difficult to replace the roller. The photo is not quite clear enough to identify the other two pieces . ( However I think that they are the other pieces of the detent roller). If you have a pronounced "click" when you are in reverse, then they are teeth off the reverse gear where the park lock pawl has chipped them off.

My 966 had a �minor� coolant leak to the oil at about 5000 hours. When I tore it down, I found areas of cavitation in the sleeves and a few minor ones in the block (did I say Minor, ah in the block?). And mine had the coolant filter on it, it was changed every 200 hours, and I was adding treatment to the radiator every year. It seems to me that I used JB weld to fill in the cavitations in the O-ring grooves and put in new sleeves. Cavitation is common on the 66 series, and the early ones didn�t have the filter on them. (By the way my local dealer offered me junk price for my tractor with good rubber on it because they were afraid of what they would find when they fixed it.) Good luck�

Shoot him $4500 and MAYBE let him work you up to $5000, but I agree with tractor vet on this one, it's time to evaluate just how bad do you want this tractor. This tractor was used until they found the "minor" coolant leak then was put up for sale after having all of $3.00 spent on it for repairs. I think they are passing off a problem. There are other tractors to had.

From what you have been telling us as for myself i would keep looking and do you need a tractor of that size because there are some 1086's that i have been seeing for less and yes they do need some work but it is a newer tractor with a better cab and when fixed worthe more , now i am not crazy about the cabs on any of the newer I H's but with the aftermarket step added it makes it easier to get in and out of . like i said i would rather put three grad in and 86 then two in a 66 but that is me as i have seen guys by a 66 thinking that we can fix it and yes you can fix it or you can find one that is better for less then your going to have tryen. And you don't know anything about the read end or trans. that can jump up and bite you in the donkey fast.

here in southern ohio a 66 will out sell a 86 bigtime. and as for the motor as long as it doesent have a spun bearing 1250 bucks shud do the head and a outta frame overhaul kit. if the ta is out 500 bucks will buy you a complete tranny and none ta in the housing, a easy switch the rear hog is the same as a 706 lotsa them to b had there is lotsa parts cheap for these tractors.
