I always thought a little 4 Cylinder Perkins in one at about 75 hp would be neat. The length would be close so you wouldn't hack up the sheet metal(No-No in my mind), and it wouldn't be hard to do.

It"s your tractor and do what you want. Collectors can tell you all day that it"s too valuable to change, but there is a rediculas market out there for these tractors these days. You can buy a 560 with a 6 cylinder in it and have the same thing you want to build. Let economics dictate your decision.

And, as more get cut up, the price will increase. I don't think they are priced too high (except for me, maybe), still less than a JD 730, the last big row crop before the new generation.

You can find a good SM engine for $500 to $700 and put it back to original condition. The market for SMTA's is hot latelly with them selling for up to $5000 plus for a good one.

That is more than I see them sell for. What is a "good" one and do they actually sell for that or is that the asking price? I know that a lot of overpriced MTA's have flooded the market recently. BTW, I own an MTA so I am always interested in true value.

If indeed it is a true Super MTA, it needs to be restored to as close to original as possible, or sold to someone who wants to restore it. The sale price should fetch enough money to allow you to buy a plain M, and then you can do whatever you want.

I used to hang around a lot of Jeepers who put all kinds of big engines in their jeeps. Then they put beefed up axles because the old ones broke, finally thay put in heavy put transmissions and transfer cases because they broke. What was left was a jeep body with a race car drive system, it wasn't really good for jeeping anymore and wasn't a race car but something in between. I think the SMTA is too good a tractor to put a big engine in. The T/A is not ment for that kind of power. I would think with the availability of M and Super M engines it would be a better choice to put one of those in and keep it, not original, but closer. Put the big engines in Olivers or something not really good originally.

You would advocate putting any engine in an Oliver but only an original engine in a SMTA??? Interesting ,considering they only made 1300 of the old style 88's.I would agree that the SMTA is a unique tractor but I know of alot more of them than the 88's.Let him do what he want with his own tractor,it only makes the rest worth more.By the way What where the production #'s for the SMTA 3000? thats twice as many as those "olivers that were not really good originally."

SMTA is not rare, 26724 produced (all models). Collectors like them, apparantly because they were the 1st IH tractor with a TA and live pto, they were made for only one year, and they were just enough different from the earlier stage 2 Super M and the later 400 to make them collectible. The rare one is the Super MVTA with LPG, and the Diesel MDVTA. I don't participate in "brand wars". You will probably find a similar situation with certain Olivers.
