Once again the tractor photo experts have the wrong caption under a nice picture. Picture of the 450 demonstrator is a gas tractor with the caption saying 450 diesel. I wish they would get there facts straight.

As part of my job with the Kansas Ag Experiment Station before I retired, I was required to write articles. Amazing how many mistakes a person can make even after proofing 3 or 4 times, in addition to having another 2 or 3 reviews. Unfortunately they end up being published.

Well, that's a higher rate of accuracy than on this forum, where there is continual mention of Farmall W-30s, Farmall W-4, Farmall O-4s, Farmall I-4s, Farmall crawlers, M Demonstrators, factory electric start F-20s, etc.etc. I hope people aren't going to parts counters and asking for parts for those things....

And a gas versus Diesel mistake in that run of years for IH is an easy mistake to make.

But you can clearly see there is no diesel pump on this tractor, just a carberator.. It,s not that hard to tell a diesel or gas tractor apart. Plus no Diesel emblems.

diesels have a carb and an injector pump. If the tractor is shown from the right side it will have a carb. If shown from the left it will have a pump.

People make mistakes -- There are errors in everything you read, luckily most don't hurt anything, such as Leffingwell's caption. You have to take all info with a grain of salt until you have enough knowledge about a particular subject, as you do about 450's and 450 diesels. That is simply a typo.

I understand your the Guru on this kid of stuff. Who made the W-4. I had always thought McCormick-Deering/aka Farmall made them. After reading your post, I"m curious now. Thanks for your input.

You know that if you look at the IH emblem long enough, it looks like a guy sitting on a tractor.

McCormick Deering did't make anyhing, either- it was just a name.

Here's how it worked for the Farmall 400:
International Harvester-Company
Farm Tractor Divisio-division that manufactured tractors
McCormick- tradename for the ag equipment line in the US, includes products made by other divisions
Farmall-Tradename for McCormick row crop tractors within the McCormick line, also equipment for those tractors produced by other divisions.
Farmall Works- name of factory where 400s, Farmall and non-Farmall, were produced. Factory named after the Farmall Regular. Other factories also built Farmalls

International Harvester Co. Built all of those tractors. Farmall was the trade mark name on the row crop tractors from the F models through the 06 series. O 's were orchard models, I's were Industral models, w's were also known as standard and used most in the wheat growing country. IHC was made up from a merger of McCormick and Deering Co's. Not being an expert on this I am sure some one else will have some better input than I do.

Thanks Guy, So if I find one of these that I can afford, it should say International on the grill?

All IHC tractors should have (if not lost off ) an IH emblem on the very top of the grill it is an H with a I right in the middle of it, just a little longer than the H. The F series will not have this The Regular, F12, F14, F20, F30, A, B, C, H, M, 100, 200, 300, 400, 130, 230, 350, 450, 140, 240, 340, 460, 560, 504, 706, 806, and a few others maybe will have Farmall on each side with either McCormick, McCormick Deering or International above or below the word Farmall depending what it is. Please note there are also some Utillity Models 300, 330, 350, 240, 340, 460, 504, I may have missed some, they will have International on each side. Row crop tractors are the higher profile with either tricle front end or wide front end, Utillity tractors are lower profile with a wide front and swept back front axle. There was also a W400, W450. As I said there are some people on this forum with a lot more knowledge on this subject than I. This is 45 to 50 years of tractors. Jim

The letter series did not have an IH emblem on the grill until the super series, likewise the decal on the side of the hood made no reference to IH until about 1946. Prior to 1946 those tractors were called McCormick-Deering Farmalls. The industrial series, I-4, I-6, and I-9, were all International. the W-4,W-6, and W-9 were first badged with McCormick-Deering, and later became just McCormick. The W series were not badged IH until the super series.
