How do you tell a (Super M) from a (regular M)besides looking at the Tag and serial number? Red

The major difference would be the increase in cubic inch. The M has a 248 ci engine and the SM has a 264 ci engine. These numbers can be found on the side of the block. The late M's and SM had disc brakes and identical lights. The SM choke wire may have been moved to the motor side of the carburetor also.

Several Super M spotting features:

1 - The letters "C-264" cast prominiently in the upper right rear of the engine block over the oil filter.

2 - Disk brakes (though a few late M's were factory equipped with disk brakes...)

3 - Date codes on major castings ending in X, Y or Z (meaning the part was cast in 1952, '53 or '54 respectively)

4 - If it hasn't been knocked off, a small, square aluminum "I-H" emblem at the top front of the grille (an M will have the larger, winged "FARMALL" emblem here.)

Note that the absence of live hydraulics (no hyd pump ahead of the distributor and the battery box located under fuel tank) does not necessarily mean a tractor is not an SM. Early production (so called "Stage I") SM's were not equipped with live hydraulics.

And of course the presence of "Super M" decals mean nothing! There's no shortage of 40's-era M's sporting Super M decals.

Put it in 4th gear. The "M" is slow and the "Super M" is much faster.
