Hi All,
I usually hang out on the 8N discussion board these days, but my first tractor was an H that I regret parting with to this day. As a result, I am looking to replace it. I am considering one that has a stuck motor, has not run in 2-3 years. How serious a problem is this, on average? Will soaking the cylinders in trans fluid or MMO usually work? Anything coomon on these I should look for that might indicate a more serious (fatal) issue?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Many old Farmalls were converted to thin sleeves and over-size aluminum pistons, If you have stuck aluminums most times the sleeve will come before the piston

My "B" was stuck for well over ten years. Pulled the head and pan, added trans fluid for three to four weeks all the while gently tapping on the rods and pistons. I had the head rebuilt and she's been running ever since (4 yrs). However, as indicated, a rebuild kit is very reasonable and easy to install.

Remove the plugs, and squirt in the liquid of your choice. Some swear by (or at) any or all of the following: ATF, brake fluid, Marvel Mystery oil, PB Blaster, WD40, Mobil 1, turpentine, etc.
Assuming the transmission and rear end aren't frozen also, lock the left brake, and raise the right rear wheel. Then put the tractor in 5th gear. Try to "rock" the wheel forward and backward with an eye on the fan blade. When it starts to move a little, you're on your way! This process can take hours to months, depending on the condition of the engine and your patience. It won't hurt to chain a wheel weight onto the outside of the tire so it can be left at "3:00 or 9:00" to keep pressure on things overnight.
You may or may not wish to try to start it once it's loosened up. If you decide to tear it down for inspection before starting, it'll be a lot easier with it loose.
Let us know how it goes!

I have an H that was parked under a tree for more then 25 years. It now runs good and it was locked up. I filled the cylinders with tranny fluid and then after a day or 2 hooked a battery up to it 12 volts but didn't hook up ignition wires to it. I would just do quick taps on the starter buttons and it popped loose. It did have one or 2 stuck valves and I pulled the valve cover and worked them and poured tranny fluid on them and they popped loose. If you want a good running H that need to be restored its for sale.

I would use transmission fluid and let it soak for a few days. If it doesn't free up I would pull the head and drop the pan and use a piece of 2X2 oak to tap on the rods. You need to be patient. If they don't move, keep soaking and try a few days later. Hal

I've had good luck with the previous owner being honest. If it's just been sitting, the exhaust is covered, the exhaust pipe is not loose in the manifold, and the muffler is not rusted through on top, it might come free easily.

By all means pull the plugs and see if one or more are rusted up.

Andy Martin is right, but if the engine is stuck because it was left outside and the exhaust not covered, well, you will probably end up breaking the pistons to get them out. The good news is that a complete rebuild kit with new sleeves and pistons is not all that unreasonable IF you shop around, and then you will have a brand new engine.
