Put a tank heater on my 560 diesel two weeks ago. Had to tee into the temp guage sensor fitting, as I could not get any of the other large plugs in the head busted loose. Ended up with a whole mess of fittings, in order to get around the fuel filters. Sealed all threads with teflon tape. A week later, I've got coolant leaking past the threads of several fittings. Took it all back apart and retaped everything, the teflon tape almost looked like it had turned to "mush" in several places. Thought all was well until I noticed a drip this morning. What gives? I've worked with pipe fittings many times and have never had a problem like this. Is it possible somthing in the coolant is eating away the tape? Coolant is supposed to be new, was changed by the guy who overhauled the engine, but God only knows whats in there.

Everything I have plumbed into my building the last 5 years is Chinese -- it is all that is sold here. Water, gas, compressed air, pipe dope or tape -- It does NOT leak. I wish it was U.S. made, but don't blame the source, unfortunately it appears as good as U.S. made.

I don't know if you're aware of this but the tape can be put on in the wrong direction. That sometimes causes the tape to tear and ball up, causing the fitting to leak.

Everybody knows the china crap fittings are junk so no sense going there. I look high and low for US fittings. I just don't like that China junk on my engines or in my home plumbing system. I gave up tape looooong ago. You need a good high temp fuel resistant teflon based engine assembly dope. That gasoilia product is a good one. There are many others. Save yourself reworking leaky fittings. Get US fittings and then use a good dope and toss the tape. America ain't what she used to be. Dadblamit. How many big business types who outsource to China are actually buying and using the end product? None.... How many would even know how to use it? None.... Ok, so I don't like junk hardware of any kind. I just don't see why we should have to buy junk hardware.

Gentlemen the gasoila product will work better than the blue goo. I have used it on natural gas, propane, water, and oil field lines for years. Just follow the directions. It will handle gaps in not so precise threads.

Try this pipe sealant and it is sold at most plumbing suppliers. The name is Gasoila. Their website is www.federalprocess.com. I use it on pipe fittings used on natural gas and will work on water too. Cost is less than $10.00 for a small can with a brush and will last a long time. Hal

Personally I would doubt that there is much of anything that will eat that teflon tape. When you take a fitting apart that had the tape in it always looks balled up to me. My guess would be that the pipe fittings are made in china with more gaps to leak. I would use a pipe dope compound or I even use Permatex silicone gasket sealant ( the blue stuff) on pipe fittings once in a while with good results.

Re made in China pipe fittings : I remember a few years back I was expanding a barn and my local plumbing wholesaler was short of some fittings. Had to purchase imported ones. Within months, I had to redo the sections that had Asian material. My simple brain tells me that it is only going to get worse. I have ranted here before on the negative aspects of this imported sh-t!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!QR

I am all for saving dollars but NOT in having to have inferior product. When ( and I do not think that the day is too far in the future) the U.S.A.is not able to maintain a high level of domestic manufacturing, they (we) are setting ourselves up for a major problem. In 1942, the domestic industries were able to switch from civilian manufacture goods to military in a short 6 months. If that capacity was not there, alomg with quality, the WW2 result might have been very different. History repeats itself, often due to a group who make the same mistakes as a previous generation. The youngist WW2 vets are now about 78 years old. I do not think that many of them are still in managerial positions. When the younger people forget(or probably never learned) what is required to keep a strong economy, including domestic manufacturing, they are setting themselves up for one h-ll of a fall. Look at the success of Asian cars, and the woes that GM etc. has. And so on..... .QR

Yes they are made in china from local fleet farm store. Ever try black permatex? I've got a can and was thinking of trying that.

Black permatex is no comparison to gasoila. This a soft set sealant and you don't need a 6 foot wrench to loosen the fitting if need to remove them. Hal

Hey, if you"ve got a Fleet Farm store, you must be in WI or MN!
A friend that moved to IN REALLY misses Fleet.
I"d think the black stuff would work too, but the other"s suggestions are good too.

Yes sir, SE MN. Don't know what I'd do without Fleet Farm, but these pipe fittings are really getting the best of me. I've worked with tons of pipe fittings and have always used tape (yes I know which way to wrap it and how many wraps to put on). Don't think I've had this many leaks in all my years as I have had trying to install this tank heater. I get pipe fittings from the local Deere dealer often, never had a problem with those. As long as I have to drain the coolant anyway, I might as well just start over with different fittings and one of the products that you guys suggest.

Have you ever been over in western MN in New York Mills or Ottertail? Bought parts from American
Farm Machinery when I restored 5 Standard Twin
garden tractors and a Viking. Hal

Does the blue permatex stuff or the pipe dope stuff work on diesel fuel lines also. I have a similiar problem on my injection pump.
Brad
