was wondering if anybody had any info on converting a farmall M to small block power? any tips on trannys. or pictures on such swaps. thanks.

That is NO small block chevy...The exhaust manifold to head mounting bolts are at 12 and 6 in the picture. Chevy engines have the mounting bolts at 9 and 3 0"clock.

I think that is a V6. I only see two spark plug wires. I think one is behind the exhaust.

It looks like a olds engine to me exhaust bolts or not right for Chev or pontiac or Mopar just a thought

Take a closer look at the exhaust manifold. The 2 center exhaust ports are close together. There is only 1 engine manufacturer that makes engines that way, and that my friend, is a small block chevy! I like the exhaust manifold design. It is very clean, wasn't cobbled, and was thought out very well. Just my .02

It sure looks like a V-6, and if you look to the right of the super h decal their is another that looks like 2.8L GM ? its a little hard to read

Interesting thought.

Once in the late 1960s I stopped to watch a neighbor actually plowing with a Farmall M powered by a dual quad equipped 409/425 Chevy engine. The noise was deafening as it had no mufflers or pipes just inverted exhaust manifolds.

I'm sure that it was more of an experiment than a worker but the dirt was "a flying!"

I can't say for sure but aren't the motor mounts to far forward to be a Chevy ? Mopar engine maybe ? Like I said my monitor is so small I can't tell for sure . But as nice and clean as this installation is what good is it other than a conversation piece even as a puller ? You've got an engine capable of 7000+ rpm and say 300+ hp in a drive train capable of handling maybe 2000 rpm and 70 - 100 hp maybe . It's true you'll never twist an axle but what are all those ball bearings in the trany supposed to do when they are let to go free ? Unless the builder of this fine unit went ahead and changed all the bearings and bushings to timken style tapered bearings with some kind of thrust absorbing capability I don't see a very long future for it . Anyway I'll bet it's fun taking it to the shows and playing with it ! It does look like a really clean tractor however it works !

You're correct that this, or any similar installation, is way over-powering the drive train. However....as long as the tractor isn't weighted enough to put all that horsepower to the ground, the rear end will take it. That doesn't mean you could put a plow behind it and plow 10mph and expect the bearings to last, but it you stay even close to reasonable ground speed and ballast on the rear, it'll last a long, long time. A bigger danger than cooking the rear end with a conversion of this type is having all that extra power/speed flip the tractor due to the operator losing control.

Shorty I think there was a thread on that subject.If I remeber sombody had a blue print for a plate that would put a chevy on the bell housing. Bill

By the location of oil filter on left side behind motor mount 2.8 chey that explains the aluminum timing cover
