My Cub's oil pressure gauge reads 0 when running, but if I take the filter out and look into the housing and crank it over, oil is getting pumped into it through the hole. Does this mean that there is pressure and the gauge is bad, because I sure don't want to run it otherwise.

It has new oil and a new filter, but like I say, when it is cranked over, oil is pumped into the filter bracket (which, like Keith & Shawn say, the gauge screws into). If the oil gets through the system and into the filter housing, something must be pushing it. Also, about the new filter not allowing pressure, does that mean that the filter is still usable?

If you have changed your oil filter, some of the new filter do not let engine build up pressure.

Is this a Cub you have owned for awhile or a recent purchase. I have seen oil pans so full of sludge that the pump can,t get sufficient oil. What weight of oil are you using? It may be possible that your pump has lost prime.

I tried putting a tester gauge in the oil gauge spot. The problem was the gauge needle never was at zero, it started at about 15 and never moved off of that (you know how it is, the test gauges get old and don't drop down to where they belong). I was thinking that since the gauge measured all the way up to 250 psi, maybe it just wasn't picking up the pressure, since it is only a 59.5 ci motor. Of course it is possible, though unlikely, that the 2nd tester gauge was faulty, but I doubt it because it belongs to my uncle the mechanic of the family.

I would get a new gauge something that reads up to 40 pounds or so. A cub when warm has pretty low pressure to begin with. They sell those cheap 30 pound gauges all over the place. Andrew

Remove the gauge/line which even it has and turn it over. If you get a good flow of oil its probably a bad gauge, but I still wouldn't run it till you replaced the gauge just so your sure.

Old, if his Cub is like mine and original, oil pressure gage screws right in the side of oil filter bracket, no oil line.

Thats why I worded it like I did, gauge/line. I didn't remember how it was set up and the cub I work on is over at my friends place. Of course its his so I guess thats a good reason for it to be over there LOL. His cub looks like a new one after going in my shop 2 summers ago
