I just finished rebuilding the engine in the M I bought a couple of months ago. Today I got enough of it put together that I could start it for the very first time in who knows how many years. It started and ran for about five seconds, then died. I tried starting it again and gas ran out of the carb air intake. I cleaned the carb and put a kit in it before I tried starting the M, but for some reason the carb is flooding. I set the main & idle jets according to the book for initial start up, and everything in the carb looks good to me. One thing I do know is that the float does not have a hole in it, beyond that I have no idea as to what is wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?

Well, the carb is still flooding. I checked what Dug suggested and I found nothing wrong with the float valve (it is new after all) or the float pivot pin. I also checked to make sure that the float was not rubbing the inside of the bowl like Mark and Kevin suggested and I found nothing wrong. Since I have been trying to start my M I have disconnected the air intake pipe from the carb so I can see inside. The choke is open and after I stop cranking the engine then the gas runs out of the carb air intake. Is there any reason other than a float problem as to why the carb is flooding, or does the flooding have to mean a problem with the float? I am grasping at straws here as I am at my wits end. :-(

Here is what I tried today, I turned the gas on until the carb bowl was full, then I shut the gas off and tried starting it. Still no go, gas ran out the air intake when I stopped cranking. I tried it again 10-15 minutes later and it started and ran! Funny thing though, there was white smoke comming out of the carb air intake. I ran it for about a minute and shut it off. I tried starting it again, but no luck.

The same thing happened to me and I kept doing the same things your doing until finally something worked. I don't know if this will work or not but at this point your probably willing to try anything. With the tractor running full throttle turn the fuel flow rate screw (its the screw on the side of the carb that is closest to the governor) clockwise until the tractor slows down and almost stops (cutting off the fuel) then quickly back off just a little bit until the tractor runs smooth again. This will keep the flow rate of the gas to just the minimum amount needed for the tractor to run sufficient. Reduce your engine speed to idle and see if that works. Let me know I'm currious now!

Check the needle to make sure its not upside down or sticking. Also check the float, make sure the little rod that holds it in place is secure and not coming lose on one end, thus causing the float to rub on one side and hang up.

Mine did the same as Mark's. If you look close, you may see scratches on the float from rubbing the side of the bowl. Bend the float accordingly. I left my carb on the tractor & moved the bowl up & down, slow & keeping it square with the carb, to see if it was still rubbing. After about 5 times of on & off with the bowl, I finally got it.

I had a similar problem when I rebuilt the carb on my Super M. I found out that the float was dragging on the inside of the bowl and sticking. You may have to bend the float inwards some to make sure it doesn"t stick as it doesn"t seem to take much to get it adjusted properly.

Check to see that your choke is actually open.

Hi Happy New Year !!! How clean is your gas tank ? Put an inline filter in somehow . Apparently your needle is sticking in the floatbowl . It's flooding . Turn off the gas and start it . If it starts and runs turn on the gas , if it then stalls turn off the gas and restart . Then fix the float problem . Hope this helps ...Randy

Toro, I already replaced that needle valve and it's seat, that was part of the carb rebuild kit.

also make sure the little axle journal in the float is tight. Sometimes these will slip out to the side with gas running right thru.

Your needle valve and seat on your float could be gummed up from old gas or a piece of rust that's not letting the needle valve to fully seat. This is what shuts off the gas. When the float rises
and let's gas enter the float bowl, it will let that needle valve to drop onto the seat to kill the gas flow. When the fuel is used by the engine the float will drop and allow gas to enter. . You may need to replace these in the cab. Hal
