Hi all, about 8 years ago i was given this manual by my uncle. He found it in an old shack where an old man by the name of cecil used to live in the woods. The story is that Cecils father once owned this tractor and it quit running. He got tired of fixing it and i guess was mad so he told Cecil and a hired man to bury it in a sand hill! I have a rough idea where this tractor is, but now there are many pine trees that have grown up in the area where i think the 8-16 may be. Cecil passed away in 92 at the age of 89. My question is how old would this tractor be?? and is this manual worth much? I put it in a food saver bag when i got it to protect it from further deterioration. The mice did get to it before i did. If any one could tell me any information on this tractor i would greatly appreciate it! thank you, Don

Up until a year or so ago, I could have taken you to an operating Mogul..... Owner claimed it was a 1909 model. He passed a few years back, and his dear wife chose to sell it, as she could not continue to use it. Before she let it go, son and I took numerous photographs of it. Was a real relic! I'm not sure where it is presently, hope new owners treasure it as it deserves!

That would have been neat Ray, my Grandpa and i would have liked that. I have found more pictures of them on the net now, there are more then i thought still running, even one with a half roof like a steam engine. I hope i can find this thing, its got to be there somewhere!

Thanks, Sloroll! I have always wanted to go looking for it and had the same idea with the metal detector. Are the metal detectors today very accurate? We have a cheap radio shack one, but it would go deep enough or do a good job. Do you think it would be in any salvagable shape after 89 years?? Especially in a sand hill with the mositure and rust i am sure has eaten it away. I would have to cut down some huge pine trees to get at it when i found the exact location. How many of these 8-16s are left running/non-running? If they were only made 2 years i am guessing not many. Has anyone seen a restored one? I would like to see a color picture. thanks, Don

It looks like they were built 1915 through 1917.

Get yourself a tile probe and a metal detector! Man I wish that were buried close to me. Heck if I had time to go to you I'd try to buy it sunlight unseen and dig it up myself just for the adventure!. It may be in crappy condition but it may be fixable. I once broke a John Deere Hit-Miss out of a 4X4 block of concrete used to shore up a corncrib and it wasn't stuck. Same angry farmer did that one too I suppose. Have you ever read the artical in "Old Iron" about the 10-20 Titan found at the bottom of a mining lake. I think in UT. Pulled it out of 90ft of water and he takes it to shows now. It is probably in the early teens I would guess.
a fellow near Ames IA always heard there was a steam engine burried in his yard. He dug it up. It was in pretty decent shape but had been stripped before beeing buried.

I am sure many parts would be unusable. It depends on how gently they buried it as to condition of cast. Restorable... anything is restorable. It will be a function of willpower over wallet I am sure. The sand may have helped drain the water away and may be less custic than Iowa black dirt... I don't know. Only a shovel will tell. Some metal detectors go deep. If they dug the hole by hnad I bet it is a fairly shallow one.

Thats it i am goin on a treasure hunt! well i am going to at least try, my uncle wont care. A local guy has some nice metal detectors he might let me borrow. The area the tractor is on is about 5 acres of sand hills and pines mixed in it. Hoping pine roots dont throw metal detectors off.
