THANKS GUYS!

Sure enough all three of the shipping bolts were in the T/A clutch. They sure aren't visible but came out easily. time to readjust the clutch linkage now.

I guess the previous owner drove it in low range for a couple of years, off and on, and I've had it for a couple of years, just sitting.

Thanks again.

When I overhauled my TA the clutch was ok but I found the 3 bolts in the bottom of the case. They must be really slippery or the former owner just stored them there.

Removing them is a fingertip job. I have small fingers and felt lucky to get all three out, with their washers, and my tools.

Of course the tractor vet figured it out.

I have to admit when he first started posting I thought his handle was a bit presumptuous. After seeing his replies over the years, I think it is very modest.

I used to think I knew a lot about pre-T/A letter series, but I'm just a novice.

By the way, it is much better than getting a free clutch. The tractor price included the fact that the T/A was inoperable and at a minimum I was expecting to split the tractor and would have expected to buy at least some parts.

This was a reasonably well restored MTA with a straight M grill but otherwise complete, painted, with excellent rubber. I paid $2,500 for it, a running H with an old three point which works with cultivator cylinders (works great), a brush hog, a drag three bottom plow, one parts M, two parts H's and two pickup loads of Farmall parts and pieces.

Since the MTA was rebuilt it has only been roaded to parades and parked.

My plan is to put it on the round baler this summer and let it remember what work is really like. It should pull the baler a little better than the straight M does.

Andy, you ARE going to go back and pay the man some more money now aren't you? Hey, it's good to hear somebody gets a deal every now and then. Sounds like you got some good "stuff" for the spare parts corner of your shop. All that stuff you mentioned is invaluable. You will most assuredly use it some day for something. Harley

I didn't exactly talk him down on price. I already had too many tractors (42) including a SMTAD and was not in the market. He wanted to sell and I made a offer, which he accepted.

Unfortunately, with all the tractors sitting outside I have people stopping to see whether I'm running a salvage. I just can't bring myself to sell parts, what if I should need one later?

On the up side, others stop by like I'm running a used car lot and try to sell me Farmalls. So like a used car lot, I name a fair price, what I consider reasonable, and they can take it or leave it, they usually leave it with me. That's how I got the 450D popping out the exhaust with one good rear tire for $800. The jury is still out on that deal, but the T/A is OK.

Then there are those that think it's a museum. I like those if they don't stay too long. A few times we have had an impromptu tractor parade with strangers driving Farmalls around the pasture.
