I have a SC that has ben converted to 12v, before me owning it. I don't believe it is charging now. It has a delco alternator on it. Where should I start my investigation? Thanks a bunch, Wheaty:)

First are you certain it is not charging? Can verify by watching the ammeter or sticking an accurate voltmeter across the battery - exactly as the good Captain recommends below. (If using the ammeter verify IT is working first: Turn on the ignition or the lights with the engine stopped - the hand should deflect to the "-" side of 0).

If you determine it's indeed NOT charging, first check the easy stuff: Is BOTH of the belts properly tensioned? Are all the wiring connections in the right place and tight? (Pay particular attention to the pair of auxiliary connections at the plug at the back of the alternator.) If the system is equipped with a warning light is it working? (The alternator cannot charge if the bulb is burned out...)

If you find nothing out of order, suggest then you remove the alternator and bring it to your nearest NAPA, AutoZone, Advantage Auto, etc. They will test the alternator for free. And if it's determined it's bad they can sell you a rebuilt unit for $40 or so.

Do you have an ammeter or a voltmeter in the circuit? If not then you can either check the voltage with a voltmeter at the battery. It should be 11.5-12.5 with the engine off, and 13.5-14.5 with the motor running. If the voltage doesn’t go up with the engine running, then you have some problems. The ammeter should show a charge immediately after startup, and then settle back to 0, even with lights on or any other accessories on. If otherwise, then again you have some problems.

If it isn’t charging you can take it to a shop and get it fixed or if you have a multi-meter, and can get your hands on an auto repair manual, there is some good basic info in them to help diagnose and fix a Delco alternator. I rebuild them all the time, I can do one in about half an hour, (bearings, brushes, test diodes and regulator) and they really aren’t that hard to work on.

a quick way to see if the alt.is putting out is to put a screwdriver up against the round rised part in the center of the back of the alt. if it fells like it is magnatized it is working. the engine must be running.

When running, the engine speed must be pretty high to get it to start charging if it is a typical install.
Test battery volts (across terminals of Batt) Should be 14.3 to 14.8 volts when running.
