Here's the most recent pic of progress on the "C" (Click on link below). She's starting to look like a tractor!

Nice work on the C it is really taking shape. I had to chuckle a bit cause my dad has a super C sitting along the shed that hasn't run for many many years. It has the head pulled off just like yours. The rest of the tractor is in decent shape though as far as all the metal and components are there. Rusty but not damaged from tree fall or anything like that. Wayne

Hi Wayne, You should start restoring that Super C, they're a nice tractor. If it was mine, I would. Hal

Purdue Ag -- Wow!! Looks Great!! I don't know if you remember me or not, but I E-mailed you a year or so back, letting you know that we looked at this same tractor and passed on it. After looking at your pictures, We may have may have made a mistake. Keep up the good work.

Hi. Of course I remember you. As I recall, you wanted to take a stab at that "C" and your buddies didn't. Now's the time to tell them, "I told you so..."

I'll keep you posted on progress.

With kind regards,

Tony

Great looking tractor. I'm in the middle of an extensive restoration myself and just had to ask. My gas tank has some larger dent in it and I noticd yours seems to have the dents removed. How did you do it? I have tried the water freezing method with some limited success but still have a ways to go. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Well, I am sort of a novice at this, so I don't know if my method is "Kosher" among the experts. But I do like to restore as many of the parts that were original to the tractor as I can -- even if replacement or new parts are available. I try to restore the tractor that I found rather than creating a mixed bag of parts from other tractors. At any rate, here's how I addressed the dent, which was about 2 - 3 inches deep and about 6 inches in diameter. The dent had not resulted in any holes in the tank.

I didn't want to weld the tank for obvious reasons. And I couldn't reach the dent with a pry bar or anything via the gas opening. The dent was too significant to use any kind of suction devices. So, I completely sanded the entire tank down to bare metal. Then I applied Rust Coverter to the tank. I then filled the dent with modeling clay to within an 1/8th of an inch of level. I took a piece of paper and laid it over the clay and traced the outer edge of the clay / dent (1/8th inch deeper than normal contour to allow for the bondo). I then used the paper as a pattern and traced its outline onto a piece of sheet metal. I then cut out the sheet metal. I removed the clay from the dent and placed the piece of sheet metal on the dent and "welded" it into place with JB Weld. I thin applied a thin layer of Bondo and sanded it until it conformed to the original contour of the tank. I then primed and painted.

I hope this helps, and good luck with your project!

Tony

Wow, it looks great!

I have to tell you a true story. I"m looking for a Super C to buy myself, and I remember searching about 6-8 months ago on Google for sites about C"s to learn more about them. I distinctly remember finding your site when you posted the first few photos - I recall laughing out loud, thinking it was a joke. This guy is trying to be funny - he can"t do anything with that pile of junk!

You made a believer out of me. Talk about long vision! I"m really impressed. Please keep posting your progress - can"t wait to see the final product. This would make a great story.

Thanks Paul. That's hilarious. I'm probably nuts for even trying to restore that heap of junk, but the further "gone" it is, the more satisfaction I get out of bringing it back. I have never purchased a tractor that ran. All have been relegated to the junk heap. I think I am going to name this one "Lazarus". At times, my workshop looks like Pompei, because of the accumulation of all the rust dust that I have sanded and grinded off. I have to grind for awhile and then leave and let the dust settle until visibility returns to a couple of feet!

Good luck finding a Super C. There is a ton of them for sale in the classified ad section of the most recent Red Power Magazine.

Tony

Tony,

I just found the rest of your website - you"ve done a lot of work on it since last I checked! Thanks for putting in the effort on the website because it"s helpful encouragement for someone like me who has done more "surface restoration" (stripping, painting, electrical, seals, etc) to attempt the challenge of something more "serious mechanical". It really helps to see the steps and how you solved each problem. I can"t think of anything more rewarding than to use the skills one has collected over the years to bring an old, used up and mistreated machine "back from the dead". Lazarus is a good name for the C!

Couple of years ago I had the owner where my daughter was taking riding lessons offer me a 39 M, and a pile of parts, that had been sitting with the motor open on top for an indefinite number of years, for free. In fact he even offered to deliver it to my barn for free. It looked much too daunting for me at the time, but maybe I should have considered it. (It may still be there . . .)

You did a super job on your H as well, and I can see you"ve got some challenges ahead on that F-12. I"ve added your site to my other "Favorites" and I"ll be checking back periodically to see how you"re progressing. Your site is appreciated.

Paul,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad the website is helpful. Now, about that '39 M.

GO SEE IF IT IS STILL THERE AND BRING IT HOME!!!! You can get that thing looking like new. Parts are easy to find. Just remember, if you fail, you can always part it out and probably make more than it's worth as a complete unit. Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but it's a thought that helps motivate you to "take the leap".

With kind regards,

Tony

My goodness, you must like to restore old Farmalls! I would have said this one was too far gone, but I"m glad you saved her. Thanks for the photos.

Thanks Paul. Yes, I've definitely caught the fever. I too feel like we are "saving them" -- sure beats having these characters hauling them off for scrap metal...

I can't wait to get some old implements for them and start farming with them! Of course, I'll have a lot of work to do cleaning up and fixing the implements as well.

Hi Tony, That's hard to believe you've revived that old tractor in such a short time. Some really nice pictures too. I did an A that wasn't quite that bad. The engine was a basket case and I had to drive out the sleeves & pistons after soaking them with transmission fluid. Had to replace the rims, tires and steering wheel. With a new sleeve kit, relined cluch disc, polished crankshaft & renewed head it ran like a new one.
I gave $100.00 for it and that included the 16-inch moldboard plow. Hal

Thanks Hal. I'll bet that was particularly satisfying when you started that "A" for the first time! I can't wait to start up the "C". I hope I can get the "before and after photos" published in Red Power when it's done. I have a ton of work to do on the engine, but while I save up the money for the rebuild kit, I figured I'd restore parts and do the cosmetics. In the weeks that I am in the mood, I try to restore one part per day. I ended up trying to save my steering wheel (which was deformed by the tree falling on it). I used a sledge hammer and a bottle jack to straighten it out. I am still experimenting with methods of adding grips (mine is all cracked off).

With kind regards,

Tony

Great job! Brings back memories as Dad had two Super C's on the farm in Kansas in the 60's. Really good little work horses.

Thanks Mel. Can't wait to see what it can do. Maybe by July I'll have her running...
