After about 2 years of work on this silly thing, I finally got it running today. After a stuck carb float and a few other little things, she fired right up. Ran it for about 20 minuites or so, re adjusted the valves, looked all around for leaks, etc. Started it back up again and let it get to operating temperature and then I noticed a drop of oil on the ground, then another and so on. Seems the front main engine seal (newly installed)is leaking. So close but yet so far away. All that was left to do was paint one wheel and put the decals on. Guess I'll wait till spring for this one. Any trick to that main seal that I don't know about?

You can also get a neww seal with a double lip that will work Check with your supplier and if he cant supply one go to someone who can as they are avail. Most of the time any parts house can get a double lip but some places dont have trained personel that even knows how to find one.

If that oil leak is from the timing gear cover seal, your damper pulley hub may have a groove from the old seal rubbing against it. Chicago-Rawhide has a speedi sleeve to cover the worn area and with a new seal. Your Case/IH dealer may have them too. I see they mention them in their manual, but no part numbers. Hal

Don't know if this will help you or not but I had this happen to me once. I got a new crank pulley and didn't remove a little sticker that was on it. With the sticker on it the seal leaked badly. Pulled it the pulley back off and removed the sticker and put it back on, no more leak. Your problem maybe some thing that simple

If your seal is at the outer edge of the cover there may be enough room for you to carefully tap it farther into its bore, creating a new sealing opportunity. Good luck,
JimN

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm just gonna tear it apart ONE MORE TIME!! and deal with it. There wasn't a sticker on it and the seal was installed dead flat and all the way in the cover, I checked fit and everything. I'm just wondering if the oil didn't get up there in time, (since the tractor sat so long)and the seal got too hot before the oil made it there. Don't know, kinda discouraging though.

Thank You,

You may want to coat the lip of the new seal with lubri-plate. Hal

If you put Lubriplate on the lip (even long ago) that would be sufficient to prevent startup grief.
When you pull it down, take the (nonfunctional) seal out carefully and try it on the shaft. Someone may have turned down the shaft before you got it, or the seal is the wrong one, or torn. Take the seal and shaft to a bearing shop (like Motion Industries Inc.) or equal. They can make sure the seal they provide has a proper elastic grip on the shaft. I like to mount seals with a thin film of #2 permatex on the outer shell to assist in sealing, and retrieval later.
While apart look at the cover for possible cracks, they do happen. Good Luck,
JimN
The shaft must be polished in the area of the seal with no nicks or scraches, 400 grit paper around and around, not back and forth on the shaft.
