Hi , I got the opportunity to work on the M today and was the weather WARM ! I got the belt pulley drive off and fixed and back on and working , and I took the steering gear out and turned it some and put it back in . The problem is I thought that the gear was real loose when I opened the top so when I put it back together I cranked down on the nut ( only with a 8" chanel lock pliers ) . I have a real good grip though . So before I closed it up I wiggled the wheel back and forth and it seemed much tighter so I put everthing back together and took it for a test drive . It WAS much tighter . I could barely steer it . I'm guessing that the gear doesn't need to be cranked down so tight . So tomorrow I take it all apart and loosen it one hole . Now for the real question - I saw that the upper bushing was the problem and needs R&R . Is this a hard thing to do . It's been leaking for what looks like a 100 years . 1/2" of crud packed in up there . I know that the lower bolster comes off and the shaft comes out the bottom but how is the new bushing installed , the I&T manual doesn't address this . Thanks to all !...Randy

I had the same problem. I had 180 degrees worth of play in wheel. I disassembled the upper bolster and post and found the the upper bushing surface was wore REAL bad. I chucked it up in my Lathe and welded up the entire top bushing surface and was gonna machine it back perfectly on the lathe. A problem occured though. The entire post warped from the heat, and I thought I had ruined it. I called up a machinist-blacksmith that I knew and he said that warpage is perfectly normal and that he could fix it. So I took it over to him and for $50.00 he straightened it out and machined the bushing surface to spec. The front bolster kit is available from Carter & Gruenewald...about $130.00.

What should the steering shaft bearing surface measurement be? I'm getting 1.488 on the upper and 3.579 on the lower

Hi Randy , Man , this can get confusing ! I don't know if I'm talking to myself or not anymore with all the Randy's that post here :) !

Did you have any trouble getting the upper bushing out and how did you do it ? And the lower thrust bearing and bushing ? I'll probably find my shaft in the same condition as you found your's . It may be easier to just go to the boneyard and pick up a different one if it comes to that . I went to the boneyard yesterday morning and boy they have a LOT of M's and H's laying around . I should be able to find a good ( better ) one .

I'll still have to wait for warmer day's to do it though . The wind's blowing and the chill is down there even though it's 40 out , sure wish I had a indoor place to work on these tractors so I could get something done on them !

Where in southeast MN are you , I'm about 1.5 hours south of Austin just to the west of HWY 218 . Take care ...Randy

Howdy back to ya! I thought the same thing about a replacement, but I was told by some old experts that 9 out of 10 posts would end up the same way because the owners never knew that upper seal was gone, and most never checked the lube level in the steering box. IH shoulda put a grease zerk there, as well as the clutch pedal. I would personally have to check each one before I actually bought one. That seemed impractical, and the salvage yards were not enthused about pulling alot of 'em just to find one to good enough to sell. That's why I opted to fix my own. I also suspect the price would be close to the same (fix or replace), so the choice is yours. I also double sealed mine at the top with lots of grease between the two seals. I reside in Spring Valley, MN. Just a hoot 'n a holler from you...best of luck...Randy

check for free play up and down on the bolster shaft. if you have no up and down movement grind some off the bottom of the steering gear.

Hi Randy , This is a stupid question - How to check for up and down movement ? Let me guess first , jack up the front and leverage the lower bolster up and down ? I looked at the parts book this morning and noticed that there are some washers under and over the gear in mine that aren't listed so I assume that someone tried to fix this by doing that . Maybe I need to remove them ? I mentioned on the first post that there was some slop in the gear ( about 1/4" of side slop in the upper shaft ) so I really need to remove the upper bushing and replace . From what I can tell from the parts book the upper bushing comes out the top and the lower bushing from the bottom ? Are they a interference fit or a hand fit ? Is there a special tool needed or just patience and a long punch and hammer ? I'm going to wait on loosening it up till I can get a gasket for it at the very least . I didn't plan on doing that yesterday so I put it back together dry ( no gasket or silicone seal ) . How easy is R&R of the bushing ? Thanks ! ...Randy
