Hi everyone,

MY '48 M starts and runs very well, but it does seem to vibrate and shake quite a bit when running at an idle. Is this normal or is it indicative of a problem? Should I be concerned or just keep my coffee cup of the hood when it's idling?

I have found that a bent, warped or even excessively loose drive shaft caused vibrations on a couple of my Farmalls. IH did not give precision attention to what is a precision part. They were not cast or machined very true. The center link and wedge bolts may have considerable wear. I fill all the holes and grooves with braze and hand file them back down and redrill.. every little bit helps here...Randy

I suppose everyone has there own opinion on how much vibration is acceptable. As Cowman has already said, the hitch pin dancing in the drawbar is pretty much normal, if the vibration goes beyond that you might have a problem. Could be as simple as carburetor adjustments, ignition timing, etc., or it could be even deeper. I once owned an early super M that would idle so slow and smooth that you could amost count the cylinders as they fired, it would probably have sat and idled all day like that. I now own a 1940 M, and try as I might, I cannot get it to run and idle as smoothly as that super M.

Yeah, my very first memory of tractors was our neighbor stoping by on way to field with his F 30. I was always fascinated by the pins vibrating in draw bar. This was when Dad was still farming with horses and mules.

My 41 H vibrates bad at full throtle. The fuel line was vibrating right where it has the coils in it. When I found out what it was, it was vibrating so hard that it stoved my fingers when I touched it to try to stop the noise. Stuck a wooden wedge in between the coils, and OK now???
