doing axle seals and brake bands and seals, i broke this ring around the big shaft, it had what looks like shims behind it? Must be for the differential? Anyone have one laying around?

Broke mine on the keft side of my H 10 years ago when I was removeing it to install a M&W live PTO clutch.Stuck it back in and have plowed and disked many many acres over the years with no problems.

Join the club, Ben ! I broke one on a 330 this week. Replacing the axle & housing, I slid the bull gear onto the axle, but not all the way. Told bro to go ahead & tighten the axle housing bolts(with impact wrench). If I had not known better, I might not have felt so bad. Broke it at the usual place, where the ring gear carrier outer race fits. To my knowledge the only ones that fit ours is a 330 & 340 gas. The good news, I already have a few leads from this site.

Dont you just hate it when the IT manual says something is self exsplanitory or what ever it says. I cracked one on a completly restored M a few years back. It looked like it should come off. So I sold the tractor as far as I knowe its still going. I told the new owner to keep an eye on things and have never heard anything. I will admit it got a little scary when he called and asked if I knew why smoke would be coming from the rearend housing. when he was driving it up and down the road in 5th gear. I sugested he unrelease the brake latch. LOL I guess that solved the problem. JON

Here it is.
If you've broken the part I think you have, I'm sorry. If I'm thinking right, there's a part that looks like a plate, maybe a retainer sort of thing. It's really the "Bull Pinion Bearing Cage," (#2 in the drawing, 1-A would be the oil seal you were trying to get out)and a fairly serious part. third party image
This drawing is from my H parts book, but I think the M is the same. The bearing cage can't be removed without unbolting the bull gear from the axle and pulling it out of the way.
I hope I got that wrong, otherwise a salvage yard would be the best place for another one.
Good Luck, Wm

Your lucky Ben! last time I seen one break, it took the bearing flange on the differential too! You gotta remove the Bullgear to remove those! Thats what catches that bearing cage. The Supers, dont have that problem,, I think Ive got a few layin round,,, CHad
