All, What are your opinions on the use of flat top versus the high compression fire crater pistons? My tractor has flat tops now. Will I see any increased HP by going to the fire craters? If I use the fire craters will I need to change anything else such as cam grind, carb, distributor, or governor. I am at that crucial decision stage of the rebuild process and your advice is appreciated.

These are like any other motor. If you bump up the compression, it will run better with a little higher lift cam if you make sure that everything else is as it should be or better.

The only way I would NOT put in the stepped pistons is if it already has more power than you need. My M has had them with no other modifications. The Tractor Vet has lots of good places to check while you are apart to make sure that some “little things” don’t disappoint you when you are done rebuilding.

Do it. Within reason, better performance, and efficiency can be had with regular nolead fuel.
Till you reach 155+ compression pressure, you should have no problems.

They will give a bit more power and you realy do not need to make any other changes as when your done fine tuning will give the best results as to getting the timming sxet making sure that the centrifical advance is doing it's job and getting the carb set for best performance and also maken sure that the govener is not wore out there are a lot of littel things that make a tractor engine perform better that make a good job better then the rest things that most people over looklike getting the end of the rocker arms refinished sizen each piston to it's bore fitting the rings getting the clearance on the bearing just wright cheking the cam lobes for ware and having it rebuilt with new lifters it all adds up .
