best paint?

What paint do you use? I am restoring a 1934 F-12 and am close to the painting stage, and thought I"d ask all of you what you use.

I would have to say Cupont also but, you also pay for the name. Last I checked it cost $100 plus a gallion.

The best lines of paint from DuPont/PPG are more like $300+ a gallon by the time you add hardener. I bought a gallon of PPG Omni acrylic urethane (the "cheap" one) today, $135.48 with hardener. But, it will last for years and won't fade.

The Best paint money can buy, Dupont Imron. Their single stage will outshine base coat/clear coats. Also, it will resist chemicals the best ( gas spills, brake fluid etc.) Goes on good and covers good too. Only bad part, you should use a fresh air mask / air supply for your own safety.

Wouldn't a 1934 be gray instead of red? If it were red I would say get your paint at the Case-IH dealer, but I don't think you will find the gray.

Some were gray, but alot of them were red. This one was originally red. I think the gray looks cool though.
I want to keep it red because I got the tractor from an elderly friend and his dad got it new. Gotta keep the memories going.

It wasn't originally red -- red appeared in 1937 I believe, certainly not 1934 -- unless someone ordered it that way. Then the original color will be hard to come by, since IH 50 was not produced until 1937.

The red raised a question with me also, but I"ve done a lot of reserch and there were alot of farmalls painted red in 1934. IH dumped the gray and switched exclusively to red in 1937.

I hope I don't offend you with this post, but I'm curious what kind of research you have done. I had been written in Red Power numerous times and has appeared in probably a dozen books that all regular production tractors were painted gray before Nov 1, 1936. If there is information out there to the contrary, I'd like to know about it.
The bottom line is, it's your tractor and you can paint any color you like. But I would like to know what you are basing your decision on.

All the info I have is from anything that has been written on farmalls. There is not a whole lot of information I admit, I'll eat a little crow here and say that the biggest deciding factor is that Any and all things I've taken off my tractor has red under it. Before I took anything apart it was rusty brown.
But the friend I got it from was a little kid when his dad baught it, and he remembers it being red.
I want to restore it to the original tractor, including the paint color.
This isn't just a toy to me, it's important to me to get her as original as I can.
It is a very complete tractor and it won't be hard except for the darn paint color!

Normal production line tractors were gray -- if someone wanted a different color, they ordered it. See the link.

Key word in the link is "all" that doesn't mean some were red and some were gray at that time.
Maybe they were oredered red, but there sure is a lot of the red F series tractors dating before 1937 out there.
Maybe that may have been a contributing factor to the "all" red?
I sure would like to know for sure.
I know mine is a 1934 (serial # 14288) and I know she was painted red out of the factory because I have every nut and bolt off her and alot of red was under whatever was taken off.

A lot of the 20's and 30's tractors have been repainted red. Any tractor I do has all the old paint removed before painting -- someone could have done that to your 1934 -- The factory did not mix red and gray colors. If originally red someone ordered it that way. I have an originally white C that does not have one speck of white under the red. The key word "all" means that ALL models were to be painted red -- no exceptions unless ordered some other color, not that they were previously mixing red and gray tractors. Factory red (IH 50) did not exist before Nov 1, 1936.

I don't know if the IH 50 exsisted before then but, on the Paint committee decision (No.39) dated 2/22/1927, it was agreed apon to paint the wheels Harvester red.
OK guys, thanks to you I will be spending several hours investigating more.
This is driving me nuts!
I sure would like to get toghether with a bunch of farmall nuts and get down to the bottom of this subject.
If I can, but I doubt if I'll will find any concrete evidence, I'll post again with some proof.

You can check out the Paint & Bodywork forum.. Best Paint? Depends on how much you want to spend. An all around good paint would be your PPG Omni line, or the paint that Napa sells. They are both excellent, but you will pay quite a bit more than you would if you bought paint from your IH dealer, which would be adequate if you plan to work the tractor, and not show it. You can go with Dupont and pay alot more

well the paint on my S/MTA is 2150 Case I H iron clad and it looks good enough for the video from the 94 Red Power show and Fast Line cover and at the Red power show it was setting next to one that the guy told me his paint cost him 347 bucks a gallon and i told him mine cost 27 a galllon his did not make it in the video .

I am not just staten a fact you are working on a TRACTOR and it was painted with stright enamel from the factory not a Plymothe Hemi road Runner ,Now i know that there are guys that have money to burn and like the braggen wrights of how much they spent and oh don't lean on it it may scratch it it is still just a FARM TRACTOR and they will out last us all and down the road someone else will want to fix it up . Now from what we have seen you can get a great paint job out of the less expencive paint it is all in how it is put down and how many coats that you put down . So if you are going to have to buy two or three gallon of paint to do the job then why would you want to spend that much ??

Yes your right! I wasn't looking for the "BEST" paint for a show car. I was looking for the best paint for a farm tractor.
I think I'll go with the case 2150.
