Finally got the tractor started and running last night and took a picture of the ring gear teeth which shows wear. I don’t know if this is extreme or just typical. Thanks to all of you who helped me on the electrical and what step of actions to take. In any case for someone looks through this (archieves) with the same problems, here are the steps I went through: Situation- Bought tractor (49 M) with little knowledge which had a small and weak 12 volt battery hooked up to a 6 volt system with H-4 magneto and generator. This tractor was still operating on original wiring. Tractor worked for 5 months with this battery and then it just wouldn’t start. The steps included (with direction from the good folks here: 1) –Replace with Good Battery cables (at least double 00’t) and clean connections with a new 6-volt battery having the biggest CCA available. I bought a with a new ignition button from TSC specified for 6-volt. No start 2) –Took the starter off and then put it back on, and rocked the tractor backwards in fourth gear and in fifth gear. No start 3) -Took starter into the shop and the drive and rings needed to be fixed. 4) -Reinstalled the starter and it turn over but then a snap occurred at the top pole of the ignition button. Tightened the connections and nothing. Took the starter off and back in and the mechanic goof around said here you go. 5) -Reinstalled the starter after cleaning the surface extremely well. Reattached the wiring and twisted off the top pole of the ignition button. Looked over at my grandpas tractor (I’m trying to restore this one and I don’t know much about tractors) which had a rusted ignition button still on it. Took it off and stuck grandpas on this one. Reattached the wires and moved the throttle down and hit the button. It turned over. 6) -It turned with no sparks, so I turned the gas on, moved the throttle up and hit the petal shortly. Turned the throttle down and hit it shortly. Moved the throttle to the middle and hit the button shortly, it started right up.
