I hate people who ask this question but here goes!

Found a Case IH 485 for sale Looks about 1987 (Too new for this site I know). This machine and its loader are in MINT condition. It has 550 hours. The guy bought it and died. Wife didn't sell anything. The neighbour bought the whole estate 3 years ago and has used the machine to run a silo blower. Its been in a shed its entire life.
There isn't a spot of rust or scratch paint anywhere, even in the wheel wells.

The guy says $14,000 is too low. I say $18,000 is too high. Does anyone have an opinion either about the price or this model of tractor?

I bought a lease return 485 in 1991. 231 hours, new tractor warranty. Then, .. I paid $13,500 w/new 220 loader, swept back ft axle, OS rubber, euro fenders with lots of field lights, CAT2, etc. Loved the tractor. Used it for 10 years. Really light duty for me. Low hour usage. Sold it 4 years ago for $16,000 with 495 hours on it. Didn't need a tractor anymore. Now we bought an old farm and here I am on this forum looking for a loader tractor because I don't have $16,000 to spend now. I used to collect green tractors, so I guess now I'll look for semi-vintage IH loader tractor if I can find one and know what model to look for. Got to like red tractors with the 485 anyhow. Rats. ^#$%%^**@# Dennis

Hi Eric, my brother bought a 495 which is same tractor but different tin with a 2250 Quick Attach loader in 1994 for about $15,000 CND.
It has been a good tractor and loader but the loader is to heavy for the front end of the 495.
Some of the problems are his as he dosen't keep all the bolts on the front end torqued to spec.
Some of it is the conditions it is used in. The 484 will require rear wheel weights or calcium in the tires if you are moving large round bales.

Yeah, I think you got me there. A little bit of a sweeping generalization, huh. It definitely isn't the best, but it isn't anywhere near the worst either. Let me rephrase that,
It is the best loader tractor I have ever personally operated.

Yepper,

Yeah, ya gotta be careful. Hugh will grab ya by the ear if it isn't a Payloader 'er a skidsteer, which worked well for him and his operation.

I, on the other hand, live out here on the prairie and either one of those contraptions would prove to be totally worthless in very short order.

We all do 'er different and in different ways. What works best is often just a different slant depending on the needs. :>)

Yeah, I know what you mean. We rented a bobcat for a week during the 5 year period we didn't have a loader and we found out that it just wasn't for us. We do most of our loading out in our hayfields and it chewed them up too much. Also, it is nice to have the spare tractor around if another one goes down. We also do our loading in small areas, so a big tractor and loader just didn't work for us either. I don't think a payloader would have even physically fit in our cattle fence let alone be able to turn around in it!

Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for a 485, no matter how good of condition it is in. You could buy a 1466 in good mechanical (not necessarily cosmetic) condition for that much. I suppose the fact that it is original and that it has a loader should add to the value, but I just couldn't justify paying that much. If it is like our 2500A, it is probably the worlds greatest loader tractor, strong hydraulics, durable rear end, tight turning radius, relatively strong motor. Not sure how much Case changed it though. . .

chadd: You've led a sheltered existance, "2500A being the worlds greatest loader tractor". IH or CaseIH don't even come close if discussing the worlds best loader tractor.
