Farmall H decal placement

I have a late production 52' Farmall H (serial number 389442). My question is in regards to the shift pattern decal that is usually displayed on the headlight mounting bracket. On my particular tractor this decal is mounted on the back of the gas tank (definitely from the factory as it has never been painted and looks circa 1952), even though this unit came from the factory with the lights already installed (still have the original sales slip and picture of it the first day on the farm). I can also rule out that the gas tank has been replaced, because I am the second owner...with my grandpa being the first. What gives? Is it acceptable to have it in either place?

They were mounted on the gas tank, never seen them anywhere else.

Hey, Stoughton...Lake Geneva here. Some day if it's convenient, I'd like to see that '52 H of yours. It was my grandpa's 1944 H--still running and owned now by my cousin--that started this red tractor thing for me in the first place! I think I have a soft spot for H's (but don't let my Super M hear me say that). I passed through your growing town a month or so ago and wondered where from downtown you lived.

Great to hear from ya Dave. It"s nice to know how ya got the Red Bug. I got it working for a large farm here in the area. Despite having three separate milking operations, there was always a handful of Farmalls at each location. It was a good mix H"s, M"s, 300"s, and 350"s...kind of got attached to them without ever knowing it I guess.

You didn"t miss me by much. My shop is about a mile north of where the tornado went through last summer (three miles north of town on HWY N). I had a good front row seat for the show at the end of the tobacco field...but after a bit I realized it was kind of coming in my direction, so I hauled butt to the basement. All those folks that say it doesn"t rain before, during, or after a tornado have never been in one. We managed three inches plus a couple tenths in less than an hour! Not quite enough hail for the insurance company to write the check for the tobacco though. D*MN!

I"ll buzz ya some photos sometime. I get down your way for work once in a while too. I chose a busy profession when I got into HVAC.

Billy, you must be awfully close to some of my relatives down that way- Reins, Quams. My tractors are just south of Stoughton off of 138 a ways.

I watched that storm from the south side of Madison. Couldn't see the funnel of course, but man, that was a thunderhead! Dad watched a funnel go over his head south of Stoughton, several relatives watched the north funel that hit- or funnels! Missed all of my relatives somehow- snaked right through them. My great grandfather was the dairy farmer at the Skalen orphanage, tornada took out the trees where they lived at the time. WIth I had the Titan he farmed with!

Good afternoon Guy! I knew you were a local boy as I've seen you down at the Thresheree a few times.

Yeah, that tornado hit the whole Skaalen area pretty hard. I ran quite a few tanks through the saw over in that area of your great grandfathers farm during the clean up. Despite all the effort, that whole vicinity won't look "normal" for a lot of years to come.

My shop is just north of there a bit. If you ever get in the neighborhood feel free to drop me a line or swing in. The beer is always cold.

You're an Edgerton boy aren't you? I have plenty of friends that hug HWY 73 and 106 down that way.

Billy, According to Guy Fay"s book "Farmall letter series tractors" The front edge of the gear shift pattern decal is placed on center 18 1/2 " to the rear from the rear edge of the hood. I would suggest that if you plan on having all your decals properly placed that you invest in Guy Fay"s book as it provides a wealth of information pertaining to the letter series tractors. Good luck with your 52 H....I also have a 52 model.

Thanks Allen...I wonder why it seems almost 90% of these decals I see are always on the light bracket then. Hmmm.

I know it's wrong, but I just don't have the heart to put a sticker on fresh paint right in plain sight so I put mine on the light bar. I also think it is more self explanatory to the casual observer, plus that's the way I remember most of them from my boyhood days.

Agreed. It's just funny with the consistency of the decal in that location (light bracket). That's why I had to ask. There are still so many letter series Farmalls being used in Southern WI that have either been painted or restored (with mixed results), that it sometimes is hard to remember what the factory set as status quo for decals and locations.
