Can somebody tell me where to find the list for what letter was for what year that IH used on their castings. Or even give me a list. Also where would the engine serial number be on a MD. Looking into doing a little research about mine and need to know where to find the info. Thanks
Brad

I know that my MD is a 1947 I just wanted to know about the casting code letters. Some of my castings are early in the alphabet and then again some are later in it. Just wondering how many pieces could have been changed throughout its life. Also I was wondering if the engine serial number matched the chassis number. Thanks for the help

Engine serial won't match the chassis. Unless your tractor was built early in the year it is likely (but not an absolute sure thing) that all original parts will have the same letter for the year. Usually they will vary only 2 or 3 months.

Where would I have to look on the engine block to find the hand stamped serial number. Just curious to what it is.

Engine Serial # is at front left side of block
above injection pump and just below head.Flat place there, may have to scrape to find.If original
block the date code will be near top rear corner
of injection pump or little behind pump. Some diesel will have engine block date 6 months or more earlier than other castings.

Assuming the diesel location is the same as gas, under the #1 spark plug.

In the future, just use the "Research and Info" gallery on the right side of this page. The information you are seeking is under "Production Nbrs" and "Serial Numbers." Good luck, Greg

IN 1931 they started with the letter A, going thru the alphabet 12-30-A your MD could be 12-31-X meaning December 31 1952 they used U&W for 1951.The location is left side of the clutch housing for the chassis number and top milled section of the left side of the crankcase is the engine number the first md was FDBK 26,145 built Jan 13-1941 this info I got out of a Int-Harv Tractor Data book put together by Guy Fay I got my book at a tractor show.It has a whole group of good info in it.Good luck Dean Minn
