Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with changing the rotation on a hydraulic pump. It is a belt driven hydraulic pump off a combine that in its original position faced the engine and therefore turned counter clockwise. I am using the pump in a different application and need it to turn clockwise, so I can mount it next to the engine instead of in front and facing it. Thanks for any help.YC

Yellott,
Some hydrauic pumps are designed to run in either direction. However, it may be difficult to confirm this at this stage of the game. Many gear and vane pumps are reversible by reversing the "cartridge". The cartridge is the center section of the pump which contains pumping element and sometimes ports. The cartridge is reversed end for end. However, you will have to check for proper seal drain function or you will constantly blow shaft seals or maybe the case. If external seal drains are not present, then the seal cavity is internally drained back into the pump suction (most common). Bidirectional pumps are usually drained into both ports via check valves so that the suction automatically accepts any leakage into the seal cavity. On rare occasions, different end plates are required when reversing rotation to accomodate the seal drain function. Piston pumps don't usually (be careful here. There are many exceptions in the heavy duty market) care which direction they rotate if the seal drain issue is addressed. Best to identify your pump and consult with the manufacturer to determine if and how it can be reversed. Otherwise, you risk blown shaft seals or possibly a ruptured pump case. Good luck.

Just wanted to thank you all for the help. I ended up taking it to the local Massey dealer. The mechanic there said he would take a look. I will let you all know how it ends up.YC

Gear pumps generally will pump in either direction but sometimes the efficiency will be lowered if the ports are designed for flow one way. (probably not much reduced)

Yellott I would think that it will only pump trunning in one direction. Any gear pump I ever worked has a inlet and an outlet, inlet being the larger and body shaped for that. A vain pump will brake the vains if turned back ward.
