A friend I work with was plowing snow yesterday when he herd a loud pop and he lost the steering in his tractor. It is manual stering and the right wheel has no control at all and just a little on the left. He has ask me to work on this for him, but I have never worked on a International before. What is the most likely problem and can a dealer still supply me with parts?

Hi,
I read your post regarding steering problems on your friend's IH 300 Utility. At the risk of sounding like a shoe salesman, I decided to respond to your post because I can help your friend. I build power steering units for that model of tractor. The units I provide are hydrostatic and actually bypass the steering gear box...so your friend would not have to rebuild his tractor's steering gear box. After installing the unit, he could steer the tractor with the palm of his hand. I don't mean for this to be an advertisement...only letting you know that there is hope for your friend's tractor that will be much better then the original steering.

Best Wishes,

Paul is right. He has broken the little pin that runs up and down the worm gear to move the large gears in the box. It's a bear to fix cause all the parts covering the steering assy have to come off. Fuel tank, instrument panel and everything connected.
That is a hardened pin and I do not know if you can still get it.
Good luck....

The steering shaft has a worm on the end that engages one of the two steering "pitman" cross shafts, which in turn is geared to the other "pitman" cross shaft.Sounds like one of the "Pitman" shafts lost its teeth where it engages the other. Some of those parts are no longer available, some are VERY expensive. This is why the front tires need to be ribbed and fully inflated, and only steer when under movement. These boxes are rather easily damaged and can drain your wallet.....
