Mind if I hang around this forum for a while? I'm into green quite a bit, but lately the arguing about John Deere tractors has been making me sick. Seems to be more good-natured banter over here, and less full-out arguing. Maybe I've been collecting the wrong color!

I see Specter that you are from the fine western province of Alberta. Was out touring there several years ago. Saw some real nice land around Red Deer that reminded me of the Lower Ottawa Valley. H-ll, I can spit across the Ottawa river when the wind is right, I am that close. Like other areas, there were many IHs here after the Second WW. Nice to have you aboard. When I have JD problems, I will flip the page and give you a holler. QR

Hi , I'm Randy , not to be confused with all the other Randy's on here that for the most part are much more knowledgable than I am about Red . I've been here about 6 months or so and on the " Right " color green site ( Oliver ) for about a year or so prior to that . I haven't been around farming or tractors for very long though I spent all my summers as a pre-teen on my grandparents farm in Georgia . I'm 49 and work as a heavy equipment/large crane operator . Have a M I just got last Sept . and a 1755 Oliver I got about two years ago . I'm in the lower income bracket that Hugh describes . That's because I just bought a small farm and am trying to get started making good quality hay for the 5 horses that my wife keeps . These are a great group of people . Have fun here and take care ....Randy

Specter, welcome I live down here in the middle of the US, Southwest Missouri, less than 20 minutes from Springfield, Mo. I was born and raised next door from where I live now. Was a small Dairy and Hog farm. Grew up on red tractors, were probley 4 to 1 red over green probley because we had a IHC dealer in our town. 30 minutes to the nearest Green dealer. I am just a little older than Hugh, but maybe not wiser. We do like to needle each other some. I have made some mistakes on here, but was corrected which I was glad I was.

Welcome aboard from an almost Canadian (I live and work in the St. Lawrence River border country)and a Deere fan as well, but I do have a fondness for IH as they ruled on farms here when I was a kid and the dairy industry still had some life.

Welcome aboard from Manitoba. Red tractors are not in short supply in Canada. I have a bunch of old red ones, but switched over to green ones to actually get the work done (a few years ago). At that time I thought IH was losing it and once again I turned out to be wrong.

Good to see you made it here, Specter.

There are some grand guys here with a wealth of knowledge about everything. If you have a problem with a tractor, they will help you solve it, if you have personal problems, they can fix them too!
There are no political parties here, there are no country differences here, there is no racism here,we just mostly all see Red (as in tractors)!

Although I live in eastern Ontario now, I am originally from Alberta, northern Alberta. Take out your Alberta map and look up..... .way up! When you find Peace River, go another 60 miles and see if you can find Manning, thats my home town!

Now then, we are gonna have to get you a red tractor, aren't we? How about a nice old Farmall M, I think we can find one for sale in Alberta!

I can recall a spat or two on here. Nothing really serious enough to lose any sleep over. Mostly like a disagreement with the wife or a spell of excess gas. It generally works it's way on thru the system in good time. I've found that most folks with nowhere else to go, generally they calm down, you know. Seems that's how it is here with me and the wife anyway. I try to keep things in perspective. Nothing lasts forever.
People generally can't help it they are prone to agitation or defensive behavior. It's a part of human nature. You have to work hard to avoid getting caught in that trap. Smarter folks than me will probably find it inscribed in the human genome some day. It's an ancient survival mechanism at work in a modern world.

Specter: Welcome aboard from another Canadian, not that it matters a whole lot on here. I just notice, most of the folks who responded are Americans. Aside from politicians, most of the rest of us share a lot of common traits. I lived in Nova Scotia, most of my early years. We quite regularly saw NB, PEI and NF licence plates on our highways. Being 300 miles from the US border, if we saw an American he was either a relative or a tourist. Now, living in SW Ontario, I see MI, IN, IL, OH and WI licence plates everyday. Down here if you see a Canadian plate other than ON, the guy is either a relative or a tourist.

Now, I do notice Kelly took a bit of a swipe at the Vet and I. Can't speak for the Vet, but for myself, I see Kelly becomming a very successful farmer, I rather like him or I wouldn't bother bugging him. I took notice to the fact, he once said, "I reminded him of his grandfather." He knows that I think he should be repowering that 706 with a diesel, rather than fooling around rebuilding that 6 cylinder gasser. Will he listen, yes, someday.

You will find we here at the Farmall board have our chews as well. Maybe not as bad as the Deere folks, but then on average we only pay half as much for our tractors. One thing we all should do before giving advice is find out what the guys goals are, what is he going to use the tractor for, ei. yard work, farming, showing or pulling. Each one of those require different advice. Then you've got to figure in the guys finincial status. The advice you give a guy with a limited budget is much different from the guy who can afford to start the morning fire with $20. bills. No one likes to tell you which catergory he is in, thus one has to be very good at judging this. We all make mistakes, and more so one that one than actual technical advice.

Now, I have a little story for you on goals. I sold some 8' round hardwood to a banker for firewood. He still had to cut it up, split it and dry it. I asked him if this was feasable for him. His reply, " On straight economics no, but I need exercise, and the chain saw, splitting and piling fill the bill. I'm not making a fool of myself jogging through the neighborhood." I told him of another customer, bought the 8'wood, hired a guy with chain saw to cut it to length, his wife split it with an axe and she piled it for drying, all this while he was out jogging everyday. Now 12 months later the wife has left him. The banker said without hesitation, "There you go, one has to understand a man's goals before being critical."

Again, enjoy your stay.

Now Hugh,

Read it again. Kelly wasn't takin' a swipe at you; he was takin' a swipe at himself and giving good, well deserved credit to you and the Vet. :>)

Yep, I like that young man too; he's a real asset 'round here. Wish he'd post more. :>)

Just feeling sorry for myself. Did not want to have $2000 stuck into a gas motor right now.
Thats what I get for not knowing the whole condition of the motor before I started buying parts.
Should have torn her down 1st. Lesson learned on that one.
Migh have been able to repower to a used disel for 2 grand.
Oh well I am married to this motor now.

Kelly,

Next summer when you have that old sister clickin' 'em off sweet as you please out in the hayfield, you'll forget all about that nasty repair bill.

Your wife won't, but you will. :>)

My wife did a spot inventory the other day.

Took her 90 days to catch the latest tractor, but so far, she hasn't spotted the extra loader yet. :>)

Your lucky. My wife balances the bank account. When she found out how much I spent restoring the 544, she cut me off. Cut off the money that is. Now it looks like the Cub and Super C aren't going to get new paint. Anyway, welcome aboard Specter. You won't find a better group of guys.

Allan & Kelly: I suppose both you guys realize your respective wives could do a much faster inventory right here at the YT discussion page. Naw there is not a chance, they would need a parts book and an IH tech course to follow up on either one of you.

Welcome to this circle around the pot bellied stove. There's a good bunch of easy to get along with, helpful folks here. I guess my skin may be tough as a bull's hide, but I am not offended by the arguments on the JD site. It's just some folks who care and sometimes get a bit passionate! I've had green blood in my veins for over 60 yerars now and have a couple of oldies in the shed, plus a couple of littler ones to shorten the grass. Last fall I bought my first Farmall, '52 Super C', and am having a good time working on it. Nice little tractor.

Anyone around home who knows me knows how far green paint goes in my book but an equipment jockey freind of mine has a 3010 deere i'd love to have the money for. And I even bought a big ole articulated allis but just recently sold it due to it being kinda big to keep around for plowing snow. I don't miss the cows but I think the first nice week in april i'll start missing the feildwork.

Sit your butt down and stay a spell. Like lots of other guys here, we may love Red but many of us like other colors or have fond memories of other colors too. Alhough the first tractor I ever drove more than 40 years ago was a Red H, I was also priviledged to drive a few Allis-Chalmers, Massey Harris, Oliver and John Deere classics. I have to admit...nothing was quite so unique as the sound of starting that John Deere A...stepping on the pedal and hearing that eeeerrrrr -put-eeeerrrr-put-put-eeeerrr-put-put-put-put sound. I get the same thrill today when I fire up the Super M; it's just a little different. Welcome!

Hi.
I have been on this board for about 4 years now. I dont think there has ever been a discusion like that.
Maybe a couple disagrements about use of a tractor for certain job. Those usually blow over pretty fast.
Good bunch of guys hanging around here. I have learned alot.

I've been around YT for almost two years now, but I've seen more big arguments in the last month or two than in those past two years. In the main, they seem to involve Deeres. Most battles I can shrug off pretty well, but after I while I just get sick of the bickering.
'Sides, maybe my hair color has been telling me to come here all along! ;-)

Lots of interesting things go on around here. Usually Has to do with whacky idea I come up with.
Hugh or TractorVet will tell me that I should not do it that way. Then give about 50 good reasons why.
Then of course I do it any way.
Then of course what they said was going to happen does.
I then take a vow to only follow thier instructions. And I do.
Then I find the next project and the whacky ideas start all over again.
