450 Diesel won't start

I have a 450 diesel that I totally went through. New: pistons, rings, sleeves, rods, and new bearings. Head was re-worked. The cam is in proper time as is the distributor. New d89d plugs cap points condensor and wires. Starting valves have about 1/16th to 1/8th free play when the lever is in the rear position as per the book. Carb was rebuilt by me and fills with gas as it should, and shuts off when lever is thrown forward for diesel. The flippers in the intake manifold are in good working condition and are indexed into the starting valve linkage as they should be. When I crank the engine over....I can smell raw gas out the exhaust manifold. When I squirt some either into the intake....it will fire for a couple of revolutions but as soon as the either runs out it quits. I am certain there is fire all the way to the plugs. Can anyone help?? Does this sound like the fire isn"t getting from the plugs to the combustion chamber??

You might check the firing order. Them old tractor will try and run if I think one and two are wrong. Pull start it on diesel and then after it warmed up switch to gas and see what it does. When warm it will run with firing order off.

It's been a while sense I have worked on one of these, but I question your statement that with the starting lever in the rear position the starting valves have 1/16th to 1/8th inch free travel. The rear position is the start position and the starting valves have to be open or no gas can come into the combustion chamber from the carburetor. As I recall without looking at my manual the dimention is another 1/16th to 1/8th inch travel before the valves are fully open.
Hope this helps. Chuck

I might have said it in a weird way. What I mean is that with the lever back( Gas starting position) the starting valves are pushed down (OPEN) and when you push down on them further with a bar, they will only go down an additional 1/16th to 1/8th. I think it may be a flipper adjustment in the intake manifold. I-m gonna try it. Drew

Drew, Did you go through the whole procedure in the manual on setting the linkages on the gas/diesel switching system? If you didn't get those set right you may not have the "flippers" closing like someone else said or some other parts might not be making completely. I remember on my MD setting the linkages with a feeler gauge at several points. Roger

Sounds like it might be flooding. Easy to do on them gas/diesel engine. Also after a rebuild like that they can be a bear to get started the first few time. You may need to pull it a little to get it to remember how to run.

If the "flippers" in the intake are not entirely closed and sealed in the "GAS" mode, it will suck air and not enough fuel. Squirt raw gasoline into the sparkplug holes with a trigger oil can. (one or two squirts into each). If it runs momentarily, then quits, there is only a little fuel entering the strart cycle.
My best guess.
