i just visited my friendly case i-h dealer for oil for my letterseries tractors. holy smoke $65.00 for 5 gallons of low ash. the local farm and fleet has a mystic brand oil for about half the price. should i run detergent or on detergent oil in these old girls? any thoughts on other brands of oil?
also regarding spark plugs, i used to run the d-16 champion plugs, but they didnt seem to last. i went up to the d-18y, they seem to be a little better but not the greatest. is there an autolite or a-c number i can run? thx

Is there any harm in running the Non-detergent. Is there anyharm in switching over To 20w - 40 will it help the engine?

Don't know that it will harm and engine to run nondetergent oil or not. As far as swithcing the only trouble is all the junk that maybe in that engine could brake lose and cause probelms, but When you buy a tractor you have no idea what was run in it so its a gamble either way. I use the same oil in every thing no matter what it is. I use Valvoline raceing oil. I have used it for 10-20 years now and have never had any oil related problem in any eninge that I have used it in

For your area I'd recommend 10W-30 year around unless you do a lot of heavy long hour work in the summer in which case I'd recommned the 15W-40 in the summer.

Nope I don't use any thng but sright weigth oils. I never use multi weight oils unless the manual say to do so, like on a Koler engine I just rebuilt and then I use Valvoline 10W-40

Any name brand detergent oil. Any name brand spark plug --- I don't believe all the negative comments about Champion. If they were that bad, they wouldn't be in business. I don't know how long that rumor has been around, I first heard it about 20 years ago. I have used Champion in most of my engines over the years, never had a problem.

hi CNKS,
I"m glad you"ve had good luck with your Champion plugs. I was turned sour on them when I had two (that I can remember) brand new plugs go bad on two different occasions in two different engines. One I can understand, but two.... Then I started hearing from all the other folks who"ve had troubles, so it"s more than just rumor.
Now, those same plugs will fire fine in a modern, high tension ignition system, just not so well in my old stuff. I"ve never had problems with other brands.

I really think it's the snowball effect --- regardless, I still don't believe it, could happen with any two plugs, have heard of that in other brands too. The more hype there is about something, the less I believe.

For the letter series any good quality oil is fine but if you have an IHC 6 cylinder gas it is critical that you run the low ash oil or you will be burning valves. I run AC plugs in my gassers and I always have good luck with them. I can't tell you the numbers off the top of my head but any parts store should be able to cross referance them for you.

Glennster, I usually use Quaker State that I buy when it is on sale, have also used Tech 2000 that walmart sells, mainly QS, we used it exclusively in the shop I used to work in, never had an engine fail with QS in it. Dealer brand lubricants are always out of line in price. I can get 80/90 gear oil at Wallymart for $27.97 a pail, about $90 from my dealer. I am not a Champion fan but D21 are in one of my H's and they have worked very well, get an equivalent from AC or Autolite..... ..Mike in Exeter Ontario

I've never had any trouble with the Wal-Mart brand of oil, from 1500 rpm tractor engines to my 6200 rpm overhead cam Hondas, to overhead cam V-8s and pushrod V-8's. Oh yeah, even have it in an old Ford flathead.

As long as the oil has that starburst symbol and proper SAE ratings it will perform just fine.

Any good brand of oil is all you need. I would use a detergent type. My self I use Valvoline raceing oil in all my engines, from lown mowers to the tractors and cars/trucks. As far as plugs I have always used champs but there are other brands that will work also. If champion makes it then a lot of other brands will make one also.

My thoughts on oil are that equipment name brands (CIH, John Deere, Harley-Davidson, etc.) are overpriced. I"ve used any brand of decent detergent oil (with the appropriate specs) and have never, ever had an oil related problem.
With spark plugs, I wouldn"t use Champion plugs. I don"t mean to rail on one company, but I"ve heard the same old story, and seen it myself too many times.
