I have an International Harvester 239DT engine. I am currently gathering info and parts info to rebuild it in the spring. I am looking at a kit from agkits.com that is a rebuild kit. I have a couple of questions to anyone who may be able to help me:

1. The kit contains main bearings. The guy on the phone said that it is an inframe kit and that mains can be put in without pulling the engine!! I have never heard of this! Is it possible to put mains in with the engine in the frame????? Seals?Help me on this one! I would like to rebuild it without pulling the engine, but I think the guy is nuts! Is he or am I??? :o)

2. Any advice where I can get rebuild kits or parts online other than agkits.com???

THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!

Most engines you can roll the main bearings out and in inframe, but not the German IH diesels like your 239. You cannot remove the rear main bearing cap until you split the machine, remove the flywheel, and remove the piece of iron that bolts to the front of the rear main seal retainer and the top of the oil pan.

It can be done BUT here is the problem are you sure that the crak is within spec's as you can not Mic it in place ya you can roll the bearings in and plasta gauge it and maybe come out ok but what if the crak is egg shape and where you plasta gaged it it show ok but a 1/4 turn its a 2or 3 thousands under . I never do and in frame anymore ya run into to many problems and i got to the point that i do not order the kit before everything is checked with a micrometer and i mean everything inside and out . If the engine has never been down before then sometimes you can get away with and inframe but at the cost of stuff today ya are better off doing and out of frame and doing it wright the first time . If the rear main is needing replacing then the engine has to come out and here again alot of times if the rear main is leaking it is because the mains are getting sloppie .

Bearing shells can be replaced in-frame without taking the crank out. You loosen the main caps enough so that the crank drops down maybe 1/16". Then take one cap off at a time and replace the shell in the cap, and push the other shell around the crank by pushing one end of it until it starts coming around. Same deal with seals. Thing is, without taking the crank out, it"s pretty tough to mic the journals to see if they"re worn or even if it"s been turned undersize. It"s easier on the rods because you can push the piston up a bit so you can mic the journal. Make sure you measure them in different places to see if they are out of round.
They have TISCO rebuild kits on this website, over on the left.
