Okay im pretty new at this whole posting thing here so im sure none of you recognize me. I am currently restoring a Farmall F-12 for a 4-H project, and was hoping you could help me out. First off i was wondering if you could tell me what year the tractor is, serial no. 7878. With factory rear steel and a single front cut off. The original block had a hole in the water jacket, so i was wondering if you could tell me what year the "new" block is, serial no 4818.

Also can anyone tell me what the difference(s) between the F-12 and F-14 are.

okay I couldn't find a pic of it so here goes with a description. On early machines the front pedistal near where the starting crank goes, has an area where there it looks like metal was carved out. For steel wheeled machines this was fine, when they started putting the rubber tires on, they found out the front ends were too light. So they changed the front pedistal to a solid piece at ser number fs11756. Pedistal = front bolster to me. They also made front end weights available. This is just my understanding of what happend and why.

Thanks alot guys, so far the F-12 is my only tractor, i am looking at getting more, probobly a Farmall C or 340. IHs and Farmalls are the only tractors i ever plan to own.

here is a pic of my 34 f-12. Your ser number of 7878 makes it a 34. Guy Fay had a nice article about the f-12 a few years back in Red Power magazine. You might see if it's available. The front bolster (2959dx) used uptil #11755 will have a scalloping to it. The frame rails curve in at the transmission on a 34. This makes mounting a hiesler Overdrive a pain. Early blocks have the dip stick. Replacement rod bearing need to have a notch cut into the rod, not hard to do. Rice Equipment in PA has a listing of parts for the f-12. JJ, the main differences between the 12 and 14 were the increased height on the steering wheel (the 12 had a shaft directly to the steering gear box, the 14 had a short shaft coming out of the steering gear box with a flex type coupling), governor upped a few rpms to get the extra 2hp., shorter brake levers on the 12, breather on the valve cover on the 14, breather on the governor housing on the 12(not sure exactly when that change took place), different number of bolt holes on the valve cover ( I think its 3 on the 12, 2 on the 14, I would have to look at mine to tell you), 8" clutch on the 12, 9" on the 14. As old as these tractors are, its not unusual to have parts from both 12's and 14's on them. My 14 has hydrid brake levers, 12 on the bottom, with the tops of 14 lever welded to them. I believe the 4818 is the part number for the block of both the 12 and 14 tractors. The serial number will be stamped on a flat spot near the fuel pump. Get that number and we can tell you the year.

The 14 had a litle more HP. I think 12 and 14 respectivly. Usualy the 12 had the steering wheel shaft just over the hood, and the 14 was raised up 6-8 inches I would guess. They did convert some 12's later on. As far as the water jacket, they had a weak spot, and many were just patched over the top. Dave NE IA

I hope you find working on the old tractors as much fun as the rest of us on this forum. Concerning the difference between a F12 and F14, there's not much difference. I own a F14. The were only made in 1938 and 1939. I believe the goveners are different allowing the F14 to have higher RPM's and thus a couple few more horsepower. The steering wheel is raised up at the driver end vs a flat line of steering on a F12. I think there are a couple of other things but I can't think of them at the moment. One could buy an upgrade kit and turn a F12 into a F14. Good luck with the project.

JJ, hi, I am currently restoring a 300 for a 4-H/FFA project too. I have a lot of Farmall books on stuff like this. As far as your F-12: SN 7878, I think that is a 1934. I'm not sure what the new block is but I'd say by the SN it is a 1933. The dif between a 12 and a 14- the height of the steering wheel and .08 horse. Hope that helps.
