Would it be a smart idea to replace the distributor on my 1952 "H" with an impulse magneto? I"d like to hear from some people who have done it and what benefits there might be gained.
I"ve replaced the points, condenser, wires, cap rotor, and plugs (basically everything) and I still have some misfire under a heavy load in 4th and 5th gears. Any suggestions? The tractor is only used a couple of dozen times a year.

I switched from distributor to H4 mag on my '49 H. It was a very hot mag, timed correctly. It ran fine, but never quite as well as it did on the distributor, so I switched it back and it went back to running like it should. That tractor has an attitude like my wife(does the opposite of what I want) so it may have just not wanted to run on the mag!

Well let me tell you something ryan I am glad your happy with your mag. But if you would have bought it from me you would have paid Less Got new Parts inside not good used and a waranty to boot.I tryed to contact this gentelman last year to offer a plan so the both of us actually three of us another guy as well could buy and sell in unison to make more and not bid against one another on mags up for sale and he basically said F#@#$ Y4$#. I have also recived phone calls and mags from people that bought from someone on ebay and there rotors were not even timed right in the mags when they recieved them HMMMMM. AND TO JOE, My SM does the same thing to me every spring Its the only tractor all the rest of the 5 run Mags I cant say that would solve your problem but I would think that the Mag would be the way to go only becuase if you only run it a few times a year A mag may suit you. But If you run it alot during those times you may want to go with the Electronic ign. If you are interested in a rebuilt mag let me know. I can put one together any way you want and save you so money from ebay and the other places. JON

Tell me more about the electronic ignition. The "H" is already 12 volt.

For the price of the electronic ign and a new high output coil you will probly be in the same price range as a good mag W new coil, Mag parts being more exspencive than dist is an ol wifes tale not any more. The electronic ign takes over for the points and I believe when you buy the one for your dist ithas the gap set in the chip.So you do away with the dwell setting thats hard to get with points. Some say to open the plug gap 5 to 10 thousands on the electronic ign becuase they fire better. I sell them but have never used one. So the rest isup to the guys that use them every day. I do know in the class at the tractor pull that I pull they are not alowed. JON

Joe - I've not done what you propose (swap a distributor for a magneto) but you'll probably be happier staying with the distributor for several reasons:

1 - While magnetos are attractive because they don't need battery power to run the engine, they tend to be more trouble-prone - especially on machines that are run infrequently. Mags also seem to be more sensitive to dampness - a real issue if your tractor sits outside.

2 - Unless you can get a working IHC mag for cheap, changing over to is gonna be spendy....like $150 - $200. Also repair parts (caps, points and especially coils) are more expensive. But if you are so inclined, for less than $100 you can install an electronic ignition which will give you hotter ignition than ANY mag or distributor!

3 - The stock distributor ignition - properly adjusted, timed and maintained - provides more than adequate spark for an H. If your's is missing and you are confident the distributor is in good shape, begin looking elsewhere for the high speed miss - wrong or dirty plugs, valves sticking or out of adjustment, carb out of whack, etc.

Have you checked the valve clearance lately? You should be using copper plug wires too and if you're using Champion plugs I would try a set of
Autolie. Hal

I am using Autolite plugs with copper wires. No, I haven't checked the valve clearance in probably 10 years or more.....

I would set them at .020" cold and see if that helps. Hal

I bought a 1946 H that had a Magneto on it, but the previous owner wired a external coil to it and by passed the original one, maybe becasue it was bad or whatnot. Anyway, I wasn't getting spark one day, and replaced points ETC. and still nothing, So I just took it off, NOW i had the choice of buying a completly rebuilt H-4 Magneto off ebay, or put on a distributor ignition, But i deicided to go with the rebuilt magneto, But it on new plugs and plug wires and i'm happy as can be. I guess i jsut wanted to keep it original....I really wanted to put in the distributor igntion becasue i wanted to put in a POINT-LESS electronic ignuition, but I bought the magneto instead....I don't think you can put an electronic ignition in a mgneto..CAN YOU? Anyway...I'm getting off topic, I think everything has thier advatages and dis's, I seem to like the magneto for now, but who knows when it may fail....BTW I bought my magneto from a gentlemen off EBAY for 139.99....It works and looks like brand new.... And thats a fantastic price compared to what you would pay for a rebuilt one from a tractor supply catalog.

Here's the link to another that he has listed.
