B serial numbers missing

I started working on my Father-in-laws B this month. And I can"t find a serial number. There is no sign of a plate or anything on the seat brackets and the inch and a half by one half-inch tag on the lower right crankcase (held on with two bolts) is blank. The radiator doesn"t even have a drain cock. It has the narrow front with 2 wheels. It�s been on the same farm since at least 1949. Any ideas where to go from here? I need the serial number when I search for parts.

There is no drain in the radiator just one on the lower block outlet. If you have any more problems feel free to contac me as i have a bunch of them also As and a good supply of most parts.

The engine serial number is stamped on the right-side of the block, just below #1 sparkplug.

Red Dave: I have a 1948 SA that I'm just getting started on. The SN on the data plate under the seat indicates it's a 1948 and some of the casting numbers that I have found match that year. But I too cannot find a SN stamped on the engine. Does this mean that this tractor probably a replacement engine and if so how can I find the year it was manufactured?

Engine and chassis serial match from 501-201000. I assume that Guy Fay's use of the term "matching" means exact, so unless you have one of the last 20000 or so built, or a replacement engine, the engine serial is it. Dunno what kind of radiator you have, it should have a drain cock. We didn't use antifreeze in the 40's in south Texas, we drained them when we thought it might freeze.

As stated, engine serial number and tractor serial number should be close. Origional serial number tag would be under the seat on the left hand seat bracket (kinda behind the guard for the belt pulley), unless it's a very early model. 1939 models had the serial number tag on the pedal guard between the brake pedals if I remember right. Parts for the B should be the same through out the life of this model with the exception of the oil filter. The older one's had the tall filter and the last two or three years used the short filter, though either could have been used as a replacement. On the tall filter the bolt head is level with or slightly above the bottom of the hood. The short filter is about 1/2 that tall. Hope this helps. Dave.

Look under No1 sparkplug on the engine block for any numbers stenciled into the block. Hal

I looked at the pad under the #1 cylinder and its blank. There isn't a tag between between the pedals either. I guess it will turn up when I start stripping the paint off.
