I had to pull the starter off my working 49 H and swap one from my project 43 H.
I think something is wrong with the electrical guts of the starter.
Any info and getting this fixed?
Is it cheaper to buy a rebuilt one?

Randy

Guess I never did answer your question, just rambled on. Definitely go ahead & open the starter up to see what's going on inside. Just mark a line on the case sections so you get it back together right. I'd never had a starter apart until the first time either, so go ahead & don't be afraid of it. You should be able to get parts from parts stores. Farm & Fleet even has Delco starter kits [brushes, bushings, & whatever] at our local store. Maybe ten to fifteen bucks. Last resort is if it's too bad, put it back together & trade it in on a rebuilt.

I think it was the SMTA which had starter trouble once which turned out to be one of the heavy copper flat field [ wires] came loose from the copper battery terminal bolt on the inside of the starter case. Just cleaned everything well & soldered the connection with a HOT iron. Still running well.

Everyone has has different experiences but my luck has noy been too good with local shops if starter needs complete rebuild. Since local shops rarely see these starters anymore they probaly do not have all parts that may be borderline bad and my experience has been that they patch them up and get them working. On other hand every factory bebuilt starter I have bought has been like new throughout. Bought 3 in 1 year few years ago and they cost $100 to $125.

Make sure the ground is clean on the brushes that go to ground. Otherwise they ground through the springs and ruin them.

So Brownie
Are you saying that I can fix this myself if it looks like parts are worn inside?

Can I get replacement parts easy?

Randy

Randy -

In most cases you can indeed fix the starter yourself! They are way overdesigned and thus amazingly long-lived.

The most common failure is worn/broken brushes and a dirty commutator. Any starter/alternator shop will have replacment brushes in stock (about $8 for a set) and they are not difficult to replace.

The other (occasional) problem is copper strap conductors coming loose from the battery cable terminal inside the generator. However unless you have the proper (ie. large!) soldering equipment this repair is best left to a starter shop.

----

Worst case is a complete rebuild at a starter shop. Around here a full rebuild (including a fresh coat of Farmall red) is $100 - or $140 if a new bendix is included.

My M had this problem after fueling at the gas tank. Just nothing when pushed on starter. Removed starter and took to generator/starter shop. Problem was brush springs had just too many birthdays. New springs and brushes were less then $20. Been starting strong ever since. Hope it's simple. Hal

Usually not too much goes wrong with those starters. Like the other guy said, check the brushes and the bushings/bearings. The starter on my M mysteriously just quit one day, I took it apart and could find nothing wrong except for it being dirty inside. Cleaned all the crud out of it, put new grease in the bushings, and it is working just like new.

Get the starter up on the bench & test it with jumper cables. If no action, remove the two thru- bolts which hold the starter together. This will let you see what is going on inside. Look for brush wear, armature/ commutator condition, & bushing wear.
