Guys, I have an MTA which runs out super. Dyno says 56 hp. It starts excellent warm or cold. However it has a "pop" from the exhaust when not under load. This may happen anywhere from an idle to half throttle. Any suggestions what I need to do to eliminate this would be appreciated.
DeWayne

My Super H did that after I cleaned and put a kit in the carb--I didn't realized that they are not like the H carb that you turn the main jet in until rough and out until smooth -- Don't know about the SM but the main jet on the SH, when set for max power is 5 turns out. It can be turned in for better fuel economy, 5 turns out solved the problem, I did not try it with less, though.

If the popping is very intermittent, once per 10-30 seconds, and your carb and ign are correct, I would ignore it. The main ingredient is that the old carbs and designs were prone to not being perfect all the time.

DeWyane, We have an old WC that did the same thing. I set the gap on the plugs to about .040 and it settled down and ran smooth with no load. Tom

A lot of time thats a sign of it running lean or rich either will cause that but most of the time its because the carb is set to lean.

check your timming and your cap rotor and cap and points and check the setting of the carb . Them old girls will pop when backing out of the throttel or going down hill . Since i can't hear it i am just giving you some things to check the main fuel screw should be set for 4 turns off the seat and the ideal screw should be set for best ideal at and ideal at 425 RPM timming should be set at full throttel for 27 degrees the book says 30 but there was a change and a kit that layed them back three degrees for better lugging .
