I recently aquired a 1951 WD9 that has sat for at least 12 years. The owners widow knew very little about what shape it was in, but the price was right, or so I thought. I fired it up today. It took a while to hit on all four but it ran quite nice at 160 to 170F for about an hour with no trouble, then suddenly big bubbles appeared at the rad and it started pushing water out. I haven't had much experience with these tractors but my quess is a cracked head or blown head gasket. However I would have thought that the bubbles and pushing water would have happened as soon as it fired up, or at least as soon as the temp came up, but it took nearly an hour.

Any ideas? I hope I don't end up in the waiting-for-a-head line up.

Most likely the head is cracked or head gasket is blown. If the head is cracked they are very difficult to fix or replace good luck.

Most likely a a cracked head, had the same thing happen on a 400 diesel.

WD-9 has dry sleeves so cavitation-erosion is probably not what is happening.

Blown head gasket or a cracked head.

Had the same thing happen to me with a W-9 gas. Ran good and drove it around several times for around 1/2 or so at a time. Then one day it was running and blew water out the exhaust - had so much rust built up in the head that water couldn't flow around the combustion chambers like it should and it developed a hot spot and cracked. Went through 3 more heads before I found one that wasn't cracked...

I might be wrong, but I believe that the W-9's motor has dry sleeves, so there is no way cavitation erosion could chew through the cylinder liner, as it doesn't contact the water. To me, it sounds like a blown head gasket, allowing cylinder pressure to be pushed into the cooling system, or possibly a cracked head. Does it have white exhaust smoke with a sweet smell to it? If it does, then it is burning antifreeze. I might be wrong about the sleeves, so let someone who has worked on a W-9 have the final say.

Well my bet is a sleeve. If this engine has the ones you can pull out...well. The bottom is rusted away due to the lack of antifreez/rust inhibiter. Hope I am wrong. Start to look for a set. Jeffcat
