Super M?

Just got a nice 'm' tractor for a song and a dance, but, the ser# is not ledgible...any immediate way to tell if it is M or Super M?
I think i'm looking in the right spot, left side sitting on the tractor, top of clutch housing...it's either just covered in paint or plate gone.

best way I know. battery under seat= SM, battery under gas tank= M

Thanks all!! Looks like a Super M...the tractor has nice paint and Super M decals...but no serial plate. It has disc brakes, IH front badge and battery under the seat. It's also VERY strong. I'll enjoy tweaking and fixing it up.

a super has disc brakes &some late Ms do too reg. M has band brakes reg.M has farmall name-plate on nose supers have the I.H. badge a lot of the supers have battery under seat but not all

First check is brakes.

Stock M brake covers are sheet metal. They have short bolts around the edge.

Super M brake covers are cast and have long bolts which go all the way through from the outer surface of the brake cover.

There are late M's with the SM brakes and aftermarket brakes on M's but this is the way to identify 95% of the tractors you will see.

Super M-T/A is torque amplifier. It will have a hand clutch lever with a push button on the left side and lots of linkages where the clutch linkage goes into the clutch housing. It will also have a long hand lever with a push button to actuate the PTO.

I need to know what the differance between a farmall super m & how can you tell the differance??? I also need to know what the heck the farmall super m ta means & how do you know if you have a m/ta???? thanks guys

as said above, most of the time to tell the diff. you look at the brakes. straight M has band brakes, SM has discs. as for a SMTA, it will have a torque amplifier handle on left side, next to gas tank. essentially it splits every gear into 2 gears. a high and a low. thats in a nutshell, it can be more complicated if need be. as for the emblems, most people i know havent been real lucky as far as them being there. if you are lucky enough to still have one a straight M will have an emblem on radiator housing that says "farmall". a SM will have a somewhat square "IH" emblem. good luck
