806D range trans cover removal question

One of these days, probably when I finally can't get her in reverse, I'm gonna have to go through the linkage repair routine that's been described in numerous threads. In principal it doesn't sound like a major ordeal, but looking things over it appears to me that the steering pedestal (console?) needs to be lifted out of the way to get to the cover, and that does seem like a big deal.

The pedestal has two hydraulic ports on each side which I assume have to be disconnected as well as all the shifter and fuel linkage and probably some wiring as well. Am I missing something or does the pedestal really need to be moved off the tractor? Thanks in advance.

On ours, the mechanic who did it didn't remove the whole pedistal. Instead, he put a bottle jack on the belhousing under the gas tank with a block of wood, and disconnected the bolts from under the pedistal. He removed the legs of the pedastal(about halfway up), jacked up the tank a little, and then removed the covers without disturbing the gas tank. Our pedistal's legs were both cracked, so he welded them while he had them removed. Ours didn't have the midmount hydraulic ports,(ours is an early 64) so it made it a lot easier.

Oops, thanks tractor vet, you're right, he did that with the speed transmission, and not the range transmission. I should have read the question closer.

Well i do not find it hard to do but i have lost count on how many that i have done . The first place to start is the shifter and fix replace anything that seams to loose , then it is down to the headed pins and replace all of them then on to the cover . First get any lines for the ft. hdy's out of the road if it has them and mark each line so ya don't have to fight them going back on . , next remove the plate on the left side of the range trans you will loose about a gallion of oil so have a bucket handy place the gearshift in N and take the bolts out it also helps to have that third or fourth arm that they never gave a mechanic so a friend would be of help take the bolts out and use a stiff blade putty knife or thin gskt. scraper and drive it between the top cover and the transmission case to break the gskt . then two pry bars and start to come up now is when ya got to watch the rev. shift fork and shaft as you don't want to loose the Key out of the shaft after ya got that then just come stright up and out then inspect all for ware the rev. shifter rod more then likely will have slop where the samll keyway is so that will have to be replaced and look at the shifter fork as this should fit tight . Also see how the shifter arm fits the top cover it should not have any slop and you may have to rebuild the top cover by having a machine shop bore the hole and make a sleeve and press it in and get a new shifter arm if it is woren or the keyway is loose on it then then look at the ware on the cam and detent plate and replace as needed and make sure that there are no broken or missing rollers . when you have all that done and back together do a readjustment on the shifters so they are in regester then do a clutch adjustment along with the trans brake and dump valve . If ya want i can explain that at a nother time.

Tractor Vet, does the pedestal have to be unbolted and lifted up at all? I'm not at home right now, so I'm trying to remember how things are laid out. Isn't the pedestal right on top of the range cover. Seems like I remember looking between the pedestal sides and seeing the range shaft sticking up right there in the middle. Even with the hydraulic lines removed it seemed like you'd have to lift the pedestal to get the cover out. But again, I'm going off memory at this point.

If your working on the reverse then that is the ranges transmission and all ya have to do is remove the floor plate and have at it , now the other guy brought up the issue of the park lock that i did over look now if it is the old style that is and over center lock it's not a big deal but if someone has upgraded it to the new style SPRING LOADED park lock the ya have to block the park pawl up by using a 1/2 inch nut placed under it on the top of the cover . the shift rod that goes stright down is for the SPEED trans and that is your 1-4 . Like i said the only thing in your way will be 2 maybe 4 Hdy. hoses if it is equiped with side mount hdy. on the dash support . . One of these days i am going to get a digetal cam and post pictures on this stuff .

piece o cake to take that thing off. Make sure you don't lose the key in the reverse shifter. When you put it back on put a 1/2" nut under the parking pawl linkage if you don't the pawl will hit the reverse gear. I would say you have teeth off of the reverse gear if you are hearing a lot of noise in there. You get to take the whole rear end out to replace that!! Good luck

Thanks for the quick feedback, this place is a goldmine! Sounds like it'll be easier than I was thinking.

But hey, while we're here talking about this part of the tractor I have another question regarding the front hydraulic connections located in the pedestal. There are two on each side of the pedestal and I know the ones on the right side are controlled by the outboard remote lever. Does anyone know if the ones on the other side of the pedestal are on the same circuit or are they on the other remote? In this case, the "other" remote is controlled by the inboard lever, which I know has ports on the rear of the tractor.
