looking for opinions: just blew turbo on 1466. what is downside to running that engine without the turbo? engine is 436, same as 986 without turbo, right? i know i lose 50Hp. would pump require reset to lower fuel volume? anything else?
trying to avoid $500 bill at this time. also, any comments on checks to forewarn of turbo failure. sure was stimulating before we got it shut down.

amazingly, engine died before all motor oil was gone. in fact only a few quarts down. We shut off diesel at the tank, and had the tractor in high gear standing on the brakes. it really only ran for a few seconds, but seemed like hours
I would still like to hear some ideas for PM to detect pending failure before it occurs.

I had that happen to me in a truck with a DT466. Was just shiffting out of low range, when the engine took off, went all the way up to about 3,000 RPM, then slowly came down to an idle like nothing ever happened. I don"t know what stopped it, but everything under the hood was covered in oil. I have never been so scared in my life. Just a feeling of helplessness, made worse by the fact that it was not not my truck. ANYWAY, I agree with the others, get a new turbo and be done with it.

Oooh, she started pumping atomized engine oil into the air intake, didn't she? That's scary stuff. It'll run at full throttle until it sucks the crankcase dry and siezes up 'cuz with a diesel, any oil that gets into the combustion chamber will keep the engine running.

How'd you get 'er stopped? As I recall, they threw a T-shirt into the air intake on my uncle's payloader when the turbo went.

BTW, it's not a simple, "take the turbo off, stick a muffler on" process. The manifold and air intake plumbing is different, so it's either $500 for a new turbo now, or $500 worth of intake parts and dyno time to get the engine re-tuned, then another $500 to put the turbo back on.

Just resetting the pump is not the only thing that would have to be done for it to run wright . So the best thing is to put a NEW charger on as there is not that much differance in price by my books. And the new one is far better .

goto the bank and ask for the money. You will spend more money if you run it without
