I own a Sw4 tractor and am presently following an online auction of one thats selling over 4500.00. Anyway . Its my understanding the early SW4"s did not have hydraulics .My question is how does one determine at what serial number did IH start adding hydraulics to the SW4"s? If this is not known is there an accurate guess based on production month? My serial is 1517J

Thanks Ed J

There is no Stage I or Stage II SW4. Live hydraulics were available on the W-4 from 1951 on up. Hydraulics were always an option, and quite a few of the post 1951 -4 and -6 family didn't get them.

I remember passing up a 1954 SW-4 , complete and good paint, etc for $650 CDN a number of years ago. What struck me was that this tractor, a one owner, had the style of seat found on the SW6-TAs, ie the seat had a under mounted shock and a big coil spring under the seat, verus the short thick coil spring that was forward of the seat and those had no shock absorber. The seat adjusted fore and aft like a Super C seat also. I thought that IH made changes to the SW-4s similar to the changes made to the SW-6. The SW-6 went from a cast front frame and 16 inch tires to the channal frame with 18 inch fronts to the TA series. Also on the TA series was the throttle action not reversed? And some SW-4s reversed as well? the owner of the previously described SW-4 told me that he lamanted not waiting until late summer, 1954 when the 300 series came out. He did later buy an IH 350 utility new in 1958, keeping the SW-4. Were there any other changes besides the seat and maybe the throttle action? QR

I"m not getting what you are saying about the seat. Why would it surprise you that the super W-4 had the upgraded seat from the regular W-4, with the old style miserable seat with the short thick coil spring. If a SW-6 had the newer seat, why not the SW-4?
I"d sure like to get that SW-4 for $650 Cad or US or whatever!

If the seat was upgraded, what was the donor seat from? IH never made a newer style SW-4 after the SW-4. It was the 300 with a completely different setup. This 4 looked factory. I am suggesting that the late SW4s had some changes, and maybe they were not in the book. QR

I guess that I was assuming that the Super W-4 had the same seat that the Super W-6 did- from the factory. I didn"t realize that the book indicated that the W-4 and Super W-4 had the same seat. What book is that, the parts book? My Super W-6 has the style seat you described seeing on the Super W-4.
I guess I"m curious now.

Many seats were replaced by the owners because the originals were uncomfortable and too low. I don't know if what you described is stock, or if that's the case. Just thought I'd throw the info out there.
