Anyone have the problem of water and or condensation getting into the rearend of 424 int.?

A very common problem on the British rear end assemblies used in the 424 is water leaking past the draft control rod that mounts vertically ahead of the top link pivot. There is a seal around that rod but as the rod gets rusty, the seal wears out and rain water or melting snow can leak in and it goes directly to the transmssion/rear end oil, not the hydraulic oil. The simple solution we have come up over the years is to make a rubber flap from an old tube about 8" square and bolt it to the top of the hyd. housing and laying backwards over the top link pivot unit. That keeps the water out and solves the problem. Change the oil as suggested by the the other posts and you should be good to go.

Spend the money and have parts that work in the end. Drain it, put 5 gallons of diesel in it. Run it down the road. drain it and let it drip. Fill it up and its good for another year..

The rear ends breath with temp change.
The condensation stays in and turns the fluid like chocklet milk. Leave it si for 10 days and drain out the water. check level and add as needed, see book. Cheap

Drain all fluid, let drip for 2-3 hrs.
Refill to level See book.
More expensive.
