I am looking into purchasing/repairing a 504 Farmall and have some questions about other models I can steal parts off of to fit onto this model. Also what motors can I replace the stock C152 gas engine with that requires little or no adaption.

It seems the most popular adaptation is the combine engine of the same size. This engine requires a home made adapter plate about 1/4th" thick to the rear of the engine. Same basic engine but the mount holes don't line up. They can look pretty good. The front engine mounts will have to be moved accordingly too. A nice 504 can be found for under $4,000.. you may end up with more money and time in the tractor than it is worth. I personally like the old girls but to pull one up from scrap can be pricey. I've done it.

The tractor is my uncles and he loves it when it runs. It blows out the head gasket at about 10 hrs of running. the head has been milled flat several times but i think that the block is warped. He asked me about fixing it and I am just trying to see if parts are still available to do it correctly or do just a patch job. He removed the head and left the motor uncovered for a full year in the Upper Peninsula of MI. So the motor will need a complete overhaul.

Was teh head retorqued after running up to temp? If the block is complete it could be plained too. If it is family, it is kind of nice to keep em origional I think.

The amount of family is a marry in and it was purchased only about 6 or 7 years ago. No sentimental value in that one. Not sure if the head was retorqued, I do know his extent of mechanics is put in more gas when it runs out. NOTHING MORE. I guess I will have to look at it and assess the damages to see what the next step is.

Brad: There is a thread down this page where KB826 is advising a guy the C-153 engine is the largest in the basic family of C-113, C123, C-135 and the C-153. I'm not sure KB is looking at this from all angles. Some of those engines were used in two entirely different configurations. I make note of the C-135 for example, used in the 404 with transmission driven pto and also used in the larger chassis 330 and 340. Block was the same for both applications but the crank was different, having different pilot barings.

We do know the D-188 diesel was used in the 504. That engine is basically the 4 cylinder version of the 282 used in the 560, 656 and 706. The 460D used the same block as 560. I'm not suggesting you try and install a 6 cylinder engine in the 504. What I am saying is we know a D-188 will bolt right in with very little modification other than breather, wiring, etc. Problem is not many D-188 engines were built, so you will likely find that one scarce.

I would take a look at C-169 or C-175 engines from the 300 and 350 respectively. If those will work you would have a sleeved engine with a good reputation. I'm not saying I'm right, rather I'm hoping to get folks thinking of what is possible for you. I'm betting the C-169 or C-175 will bolt up as 504 is same torque tube as 460, and the only difference between those and 300 or 350, is placment of the hydraulic pump.
