In the 1950s, on the farm in Missouri, all our baling was custom, as we did not have a baler. One of the people that did our baling had an IH PTO baler and a Super C. So yes, it is possible. However, my recollection is that it was all that Super C needed in low gear to run the baler and the governor was surging with each stroke of the baler. I suppose the baler was either a 45 or 46 McCormick, but I don't know for sure about that. It was not too long that we switched to a person that had a JD baler and a WD-45 AC tractor. The WD-45 had live PTO and double the HP of the super c. Took half as long to do the same baling job.

We only used a Super C to pull a NH 68 with the 4 cyl Wisconsin engine. When we bought a new NH 273, we used a JD 2020D with live PTO. No way the Super C would have handled that baler.

I have put my B on my NH super 69 (hey at least it's red!!!) baler. Not my idea of fun, it will work on a PTO baler, but I guarantee that you will get tired of it if you have a lot to do. If the baler has an engine then it will probably work fine. If you just have a small patch, then you can rake it thin enough to make it work, but if you have a large area I'd suggest more tractor.

I would have to agree with the other guys here. A Super C might be able to pull the baler, but it would not be fun and might even be dangerous depending on operator experience and terrain. I ran our 124 Massey baler on our W6 when the other tractors were tied up. With a decently full wagon and moderately thick hay, it got a pretty good workout. The governor kicked in every time the plunger would hit the hay. To get it going, you will need to back up and give it a running start like someone else said. If you plan on pulling a wagon and running the baler with the tractor, I don't think it would work.

If you are using a square baler that has its own engine, yes - for sure!

If you plan on running a PTO baler with a Super C, it might do it if the windrows are small enough - and I mean tiny windrows!

Dad did a lot of square baling with his H back in the 60's and it wore out the governor in about 3 years. The swinging motion of the plunger just kept the tractor speeding up, slowing down over and over.

And, as already mentioned, square baling with a live PTO is much easier, a hydro tractor would be ideal...

Pull it? Yes.

Run it? No, not unless it's an extremely small baler and very light hay.

We pulled a New Holland square baler once in awile with our H back in the late 60s. Not a friendly setup without the live pto. You need to back up and take a run at it so that the baler is up to pto speed by the time you hit the hay/straw. I wouldn't want to make a living doing it.

If black smoke is comming out of your M it is too rich, turn in the high speed screw until it does not smoke but still has all the power.
